JAKARTA, Nov. 20 (Xinhuanet) -- Ferry Sonneville, a legend of Indonesian badminton, died of leukemia on Thursday morning at the MMC Hospital here, The Jakarta Post reported on Thursday. His body will be laid out at the Dharmais Hospital and will be cremated on Saturday, the report said. Ferry, who finished his education at the Dutch Erasmus University in 1963, won several international titles in the 1950s and 1960s, including the Dutch Open (1955-1961), French Open (1956,1959) and Canadian Open (1962). However, he failed to win the All England on several attempts, including in the 1959 championships, when he was beaten by compatriot Tan Joe Hok in an all-Indonesian final. Still an active player, he was promoted to vice-president of the International Badminton Federation (IBF) in 1965. He also initiated the formation of the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) in 1951 and the Indonesian Judo Association (PJSI) in 1955.He was also involved in the creation of the National Sports Council (KONI). He was also known as an executive in Bank Indonesia and a businessman in the property sector. He led the Indonesian Real Estate Developers Association (REI) from 1985 to 1988. Together with Mr. Sudirman (Sudirman Cup), he was one of the PBSI "creators". President of PBSI from 1981-1985. President of the IBF from 1971-1974 and president of FIAC in 1995.
