My friend repeatedly hits net kills into the net, even when the shuttle is thrown to him to practice the shot. Personally I don't have much trouble with this shot, but I don't know what I am doing right that he is doing wrong. Is there any commonly given advice to remedy this problem?

there could be a lot of things, without a lot more details or a video it's impossible for us to determine what he's doing wrong :)

Yep, tapping motion. With loose grip to utilize finger power. Best done with backhand if possible.

Tapping motion is the key especially if the shuttle is close to the tape... One more important thing is timing - even a tapping motion won't help if it's mistimed, i.e. if the shuttle is already too much in a downward direction.
