saying G4..etc is difficult to get any meaning out of the data many people. Especially, when using G doesn't conform to an agreed standard. So I propose using a little objectivity. I would like to actually have the measurements of the following: 1) circumference (in cm) of the handle at a point 8cm from the very end of the racquet. 2) the distance (in cm) of your racquet hand from the tip of the 2nd finger (ie. thumb, 1st finger, then 2nd finger) to the 1st crease of the wrist. (this crease will the one closest to the hand) 3) the length of your 2nd finger of the racquet hand from the tip of the finger to the crease it makes with your hand. And I would like the following data on your playing details: 4) Male or female 5) Formally coached by an international/national player or coach (ie one to one, and a duration more than 6 months of at least once per week)) 6) Level of play reached - social, league, good league (but not national), national (also need to state country) 7) singles or doubles player If you are shy about personal details, don't hestitate to PM me instead. As the PM box may be full at some stages, be patient What's the objective? to find out if any of these factors are related to grip size (or the other way round)
Here's my data: Racquet: Yonex AT700 Original Grip size: Yonex G5 Over Grips: 1 thin grip over the original Handle Circumference: 8.5 cm (+/- 1 mm) Racquet: Yonex AT500 Original Grip size: Yonex G4 Over Grips: 1 medium-thin grip replacing the original Handle Circumference: 8.4 cm (+/- 1 mm) Hand Length: 20 cm 2nd Finger Length: 8.5 cm Gender: Male Country of Residence: Canada Coaching: Some, but nowhere near the duration you mentioned. Level of play: Social(?) Discipline: Doubles & Mixed I don't know what level league or good league would be. Definitely not national though. Badrad can probably give you a fairly accurate and unbiased assessment of my level. However, compared to asian standards, I'd probably just be social level . I'm guessing you'll probably need higher level players to volunteer their data in order to make any conclusions on optimal grip sizes so I'll kick things off by filling the lower end of your scale .
Data is private Forgot to mention, if anybody PM's me with their grip size, then that data is private and will not be disclosed to anybody else
Re: Re: New survey on hand size and grip size Didn't you meet Kwun recently? Can we use his standard as a reference? ahem. Let's say: same as Kwun better than Kwun much better than Kwun (only for those people who have met Kwun!)
Hahaha no way~!! If Kwun is the bottom of that scale then what hope is there for most north american badminton players! I think Kwun's level is considered fairly high here if you scale it from absolute beginner to national level... definitely in the upper part of the scale(?). Unless the average level in asia is just that high... scarey. Now I'm really wondering what asian levels are like... and feeling really inadequate too hahaha... better put me down as a novice
last time i talked to Cheung, i am around level E in Hong Kong. i think i should add all grandmothers to the the mix. then i can probably end up being a level B player, just right below the professionals....
Level E!?!?!?!?! Geezuz murphy... what's it go down to... Z??? Sheesh~!! Okay I retract my data... not even worth hearing about my grip sizes then. Ugh... now I REALLY feel like a minnow in a small pond... or maybe a snail in a puddle hahaha . I wish I started playing badminton when I was 10 years old or something. *sigh* Okay, darnit, I need to train harder!!!
I believe Cheung's assessment. The level of play in Asia is very high compared to the entire North American Continent. About a month ago I had a conversation with a very high caliber and competitive, 38 years old, player in VRC. He asked me why would I want to train so hard. I said I simply want to keep up with the B level players in HK. The guy laughed and said Level B here in Canada and Level B in HK are the same. I didn't say anything but really doubted his statement.
1) range from 9.8 to 10.1 cm Average is 9.96 cm 2) 18.3 cm 3) 8.1 cm 4) Male 5) No (some 1to1 but not 1/week) 6) League - England (our County 1st team is in Div1 - below Premier) 7) League Doubles and Tournament Singles. Preference is for singles.
Hand length: 19.7 cm MF: 8.5 cm All my raquets have one thin extra grip, barely overlapping. MP 100, G3: 9.7 cm AT 700, G3: 9.5 cm Mp 88, G4: 9.0 cm Ti-3's, G3: Four of them, all approximately 9.5 cm Give or take a few mm ... Male Coaching - nowhere near the stated extent Level of play: Poor Singles and doubles player, no real preference. I play doubles a bit more often, though.
Thanks to Neil and Cerebros for putting the thread back on track. Before Neil's posting, we got more superfluous posts than data!!
Well actually, I'm hoping to do some statistical analysis on the data. Having more people contribute to a badminton related investigation would help greatly (just like Kwun's racquet number thread) towards the badminton community If any BFer's are newer players, their data is relevant as well! (PM me with the data if you are shy) As with any statistical analysis, the more data there is, the better the investigation.... So Ants, your efforts would be greatly appreciated)
I like small grip... so... 8.5cm (all racquets 8.5cm exactly after overgrip.) 19.3cm hand length 8.4cm finger male coaching: not really. Mostly monkey-see, monkey-do. as for level... hard to say. Not competitive.
1. Grip size = 8.5cm (as thin as I could possibly make w/o stock grip). 2. Length of hand = 20cm 3. Length of middle finger = 8.8cm 4. Gender = Male 5. Instruction = No formal coaching 6. Skill level = social (high "C" to low "B") 7. Preferred type of games= Doubles
Cheung, did I miss it or where is your data set?? I see a pattern emerging already... it already seems people are finding their preferential grip circumferences to be approximately equal to the length of their 2nd finger .
