Li-Ning Singapore Open hit by 10 new withdrawals one day before tournament

The Li-Ning Singapore Open, which begins on Tuesday at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, has been hit by a string of player withdrawals.

A total of 10 new withdrawals were announced during a team managers' meeting at Swissotel the Stamford on Monday.

Among them: Indonesian men's singles players Simon Santoso, Sony Dwi Kuncoro, Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka, women's singles players Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand and P.V. Sindhu of India, as well as China's women's doubles pair and top seeds Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang.

This comes after the withdrawal of China's badminton superstar Lin Dan, who announced earlier this month that he would be giving the week-long tournament a miss.

(It seems the Singapore Open suffers from the tight BWF scheduling. It comes closely after the completion of the Thailand Open GPG and the just concluded Indonesian Open SSP. Being the most highly prized tournament in terms of value, the Indonesian Open attracted most of the best players and some of them, especially those that are mentioned in this report, may be too fatigued or injured to play in the Singapore Open.
Let's hope those who are featured wil give us a good show. :D)

Singapore players with low WR will find it tough to advance to R1. Even SIN's MS1, Derek Wong is trying hard to dispose of MAS's WJC Zulfadi Zukiffli, though he won G1, 21-18 but now lagging behind at 12-17.

The most disappointing result is former All-England MS Champion, MAS Hafiz Hashim lost in straight games to IND Sai Praneeth, 21-13, 21-15.

Our young WS talent Chen Jiayuan managed to get one game off MAS Tee Jing Yi but stil lost 21-19, 16-21, 21-17.

Most surprising for me is that SIN WD pair of Tan Wei Han and Dellis Yuliana beat Jwala Gutta and Prajakta Sawant 22-20, 21-12. Can they advance to R1? Probably not.

China-born Liang Xiaoyu was lucky to face lower ranked SIN compatriot Yeo Jia Min and win comfortably 21-17, 21-11. Let's hope she really shows her best form in her next match in the Qualifiers.

More to come and I hope the matches will be completed earlier to allow the players more rest away from the Sumatran haze now engulfing Singapore. :)

P.V.Sindhu has withdrawn from the tournament.. There is nobody to stop Li xuerui in the top branch till final.. But in the bottom half, it would be difficult for saina to face mulitiple threats..

Well SIN MS1 Derek Wong has lost to ZZ 18-21, 21-15, 21-15 in just over an hour. I'm surprised that ZZ won G3 with more smash winners, 8 against 2, the reverse in G1 when Derek won 8 against 1. It could be Derek's fitness is suspect in the rubber and ZZ has now shown he can be an attacking player as well.

Lot's more work for Derek if he really wants to make a mark in the badminton world, I'm afraid.

Can we buy tickets at the venue or only through SISTIC? I want to see the matches tomorrow. Anyone selling Season ticket?

You must be kidding me! There are other WS players of higher ranking and experience than Sindhu.

Li Xuerui won't focus on this tournament. As she said after IND PSS, she'll prepare for the WC and the national games.
And more importantly, Li Yongbo already send a message that CHN national team will not pay much attention on IND and Singapore tournaments
So, Unless WYH or WSX get very bad results at the early stage, I personal think LXR may probably get knocked out as early as possible.

Yeah, Danish players also miss SIN SS, they won't take injury risk prior to WChamp. Next year edition, SIN SS will be held on April after IND SS, more friendly schedule ;)

I think nowadays, rank does not play a role in any tournaments , especially for Women's singles.. You might have seen that in the previous tournaments.. Juan Gu has beaten Saina nehwal and Wang Yihan got beaten by Yippy and Busanan and Sindhu has beaten Wang Shixian etc.. So, i don't find any specialist in the top half except Sung Ji hyun and Juliane . Those two won't challenge Li xuerui much ..

Another misconception. If rank doesn't play a part, then the seeding is meaningless. Then there should not be any qualification rounds. Then those with very low WR should be permitted to enter tournaments and there should be no quota? I'm sure you know that the higher WR players do have advantages in any draw.

If you don't have an appropriate WR, then you may not be accepted into certain tournaments, like the SS Finals, the Olympics, the WC? :D

If you say that WR plays a part but upsets can happen, then I'll agree with you.

As your interpretation, I'll think rank never play any roles in any tournaments.
Especially when we think about Lin Dan...:D

Of course LD is an exception as he has proven himself as Olympic and World Champion. He is a wildcard in the forthcoming WC because the rules allow it. ;)

But even the illustrious Peter Gade and Wong Choong Hann had to play the qualification rounds after an extended period of injury. So ranking doesn't count?

Sweden's HH is making an appearance in these parts after a long time! I hope he progresses; it would be exciting to watch him in the later rounds.

Again you have gone too far.. I said it in different meaning.. Li Xuerui is in full form which you might have seen in Indonesia open 2013. She faced Yippy (who created an upset by beating Wang Yihan) and Juliane Schenk (who has beaten Saina Nehwal after several attempts of failure) and won both of them.. These two can be easily tackled by Li as she has done it just two days before.. Sung Ji Hyun is out of form already... I guess Li will reach finals without any doubt from my side..

Well you mentioned and I quote:

"I think nowadays, rank does not play a role in any tournaments ..."

Maybe you did not make yourself clear.
We shall see how the tournament plays out in WS. :D

So Derek Wong, Singapore's MS hope, has to sit out for the rest of the tournament as he also lost in MD with youngster Chao Huang.

Our hope is that the ladies can do better.
