Post BAM send 10 women shuttlers for Thai Open

A good start for our womens players.

PETALING JAYA: Reigning SEA Games champion Wong Mew Choo has done wonders for the women badminton players in the country.

Yesterday, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) kept to their word that they would expose more women players in international tournaments following Mew Choo's feat.

They have named 10 players for the US$50,000 Thailand Open, the biggest participation of women players in an Open tournament. The one-star Thai Open will be held from Jan 6-12 in Bangkok.

The 20-year-old Mew Choo, who ended a 26-year-wait for a gold medal in SEA Games by beating Thailand's Salakjit Ponsana in the final at the Vietnam SEA Games last month, will head the cast.

The others named for the season opener of the World Grand Prix Badminton Circuit are national player Woon Sze Mei; back-up shuttlers K. Sugita, Ooi Yu Hang, Marilyn Pang, See Phui Ling; and Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) players Norshaliza Baharom, Julia Wong, Haw Chiou Hwee and Chong Sook Chin.

Said BAM secretary P. Ganga Rao: “We have decided to send a team comprising the back-up and BJSS students to expose them in this one-star rated tournament.

“We have also included many women players to give them more exposure. “For the BJSS players, the Thai outing will be part of their preparation for the Asian Junior and World Junior championships.”

The others selected for the tournament are national men back-up shuttlers Kuan Beng Hong, Yeoh Kay Bin, Ong Soon Hock-Tan Bin Shen, Lin Woon Fui-Hong Chien Hun; and BJSS players Lim Ken, Azri Hanif, Tan Boon Heong-Hoon Thien How.

    Agree, it's a good start!
Btw, why isn't Wong Mew Kheng and Ng Mee Fen in?
I expect the Malaysian Uber Cup team to comprise of the Wong sisters - Mew Choo & Mew Kheng, Woon Sze Mei and Ng Mee Fen in singles.

Hope the ladies could achieve good results in the 1* tourney!

I guess they are not selected for the Thai Open. Some are selected not really becoz of the Uber Cup.. merely to expose the young ones to international competition to gauge their performance and see how far can they go. If they fare well in Thai Open , more will follow.
