Hi, I am wondering if anyone know anything about the speed and weight of the feather shuttle. so far, what I found is: 4.9/76/#1G@5.0/77/#2G@5.1/78/#3 in gram/speed/?(don't know) does the #1, #2 and #3 correspond to Yonex's speed #? I live in Saskatchewan...we use Yonex as20 #3 here....is it approx. 5.1 grams then...?
We are using midway and they are numbered 1 to 5. I think we usually play with #4. I don't buy them, it's the group I play with that does the buying. Before I remember that we used to play "victor" green tube shuttles (no idea what #, they just use color coding on their tubes) and they are weighing in at 30 grams for 6 shuttles, averaging at 5 grams per shuttle. All the different numbering confuses me, suppose I go back to my home country (Belgium) and want to play with real feather what # should I buy to take with me. BTW, I live in Taiwan since 1996 and started playing badminton for real here. I know that one should use a shuttle according to humidity and temperature but I have no idea what # to play when.
Found this info from www.bbesports.com: 4.9/76/1# : 32+/- 3.5 'C 5.0/77/2#: 25+/- 3.5 'C 5.1/78/3#: 18+/- 3.5 'C
If the above goes for all brands than we are definitely playing the wrong shuttles. As I said we use Midway #4 and the temperature here is most of the year above 25C Only in winter (end December - early March) it goes from 10 to 18C. And no-one is complaining. Just can't figure out the Victor color coding, but as I said they weigh approx. 5 grams.
No doubt on account of the cold weather in the UK at the moment, during the recent games I've had with YYAS20'S 78's (not my choice), I've found that the shuttles are flying too slow. I think Saskatchewan is even colder at the moment (-10C), therefore it's probably better going for at least 79's/YY#4's. I don't know a great deal about shuttles; as with most badminton equipment, it's probably best to experiment.
wow...lots of infos...thanks guys/gals one would thought Yonex would have tough QC, but their #3 is between 77-79, that's 3 speeds ..77, 78, 79... what if I steam the bird, then I should use a slightly slower speed, right? I mean, normally I use 78, but if I steam it, it will fly like maybe 79? or 77?
in regard to the temperature thing...I thought it's the indoor temp. that matters...right? but I guess the temp. is related to humidity...so I guess the lower the temp the dryer the air
In Taiwan in winter in can feel very cold, 12C and humidity up in the 80%, sometimes 90%. In summer it can feel very hot (and it is) 32C and humidity up in the 80-90%. Temperature feel is different from the actual temp. But the group plays all year around with Midway #4. nobody questions this. We once had a tube of other shuttles and they flew all out, to fast. The center (4 courts) we play in is not air-conditioned, people from Asia know how it is and feels playing in high humidity and temp. For me at first it's hell.
Another Speed Rating? The America 2 shuttles that we get from our supplier has a speed label of '49'. Seems too far from the 70+ speed rating to be part of this system?
Re: Re: Another Speed Rating? Hmmm... in that case, we should not be playing speed 49? The temperature range for 76 is 32 +- 3.5 deg C, but the average temperature in the gym we play in is probably closer to 25 deg C (and around 20 deg C in winter). Our feeling is that it is too fast, and we usually have to fold the feathers before a game to slow it down.
I can't remember where I got the following info from... Table below is the 3 most common system using right now: international-metric wt.-grain - speed 1 ------------- 48 ---- 75 - slow, for use in highland 2 ------------- 49 ---- 76 - medium slow, for use in hotter area 3 ------------- 50 ---- 77 - medium, most sea level area 4 ------------- 51 ---- 78 - medium fast, cold area 5 ------------- 52 ---- 79 - fast, cold area, below sea level From the list, you can see that the shuttles were traditionally divided into 48, 49, 50, 51, 52 according to the weight of the shuttles. 49 weights 4.9g, 50 means 5.0g, 51 means 5.1g and so on. We found the shuttles using these rating was inaccurate and therefore was difficult to classify. So we change the shuttles' speed standard. We use Speed 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80 instead. There is a 30cm distance between eachspeed Shuttle speeds are ideal for different parts of the world. For example, shuttles with Speed 76 are used in China during the summer and 77 during the winter months. Shuttles with Speed 75 are good in Thailand Speed 76 ,77 in Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia Speed 77, 78 in the U.S.A. Speed 78,79 in Finland, Canada, Korea and Japan. Speed 79, 80 in Australia in winter. Speed 73-74 would only be played in high altitude area as Yunnan Province in China and Colorado Springs in U.S.A. or high temperature area as Johannesburg in South Africa.
5 ------------- 52 ---- 79 - fast, cold area, below sea level i can't see the logic of the above catergory since as distance below sea level increases, we would be closer to hell and temperature increases accordingly
Usually the halls where I play are around 18 degrees c, maybe higher when busy, so maybe 20, I use 77 and dont have to slow the shuttles usually, 78 speed usually has to be tipped, and 76 is too slow (rallies never end, mid court clears to mid court clears) RE sea level: I think if I played below sea level a very fast shuttle would have to be used as I think my 77s would be very slow through sea
the lower the geographical heigth the higher atmospheric pressure. Air is more dense so you need faster shuttle.
