Why do you say that. Just that when I try a bigger grip I lose power. I prefer smaller grip(wood then towel). Easier for me to keep a relaxed grip and easier to change to different grips and allows me to keep space between palm and grip.
I believe this as well. Small is too uncomfortable and big is a bit too comfortable so everyone needs to find their own preferred size.
Shinichi - how are you liking the TK6k? Did your local store get more stock of the MX90?
I think this is different for each person, we all have different size hands also right? I prefer medium. Wood, protection tape, thick overgrip.
I think it depends on liking, level of play, technique and the size of your palm. I have small hands and use Yonex G4 with a layer of towelgrip on wood for summer and a layer of thin overgrip with less overlapping for winter. From my experiences I lose control and can't change the grips quickly if I use a too thick grip. It offers a strange feeling like holding a tin of coke and I cant use fingerpower properly. Maybe I have small girlish hands. I noticed only disadvantanges if I use a too thick grip. Too thin grips can cause tennis elbows, but I never had problems.
IMO and from my experience the gripsize is right by this rule of thumb. Grap the rackethandle like shown on the pic. Beware this is NOT the correct way to hold a racket. If your fingers nearly to slightly touch your palm the gripsize should be right or a good start to customize the grip for your liking. It will offer room between your palm and racket and you will be able to use finger power. If you grab it the right way. With adding an overgrip or by replaycing the factory grip with a thinner grip you can tune your grip for your liking in both directions.
Funny thing. At my club all are laughing about my small grip. I must add that I grapped it loose on the picture. If I grap it tight my ring and middlefinger touch my palm clearly.
A little on the big side (G5 stock grip with G08 0.75mm): Perfect size (G5 stock grip with G11/G09 0.6mm) Of course the bigger one feels very nice and cushy but on certain occasions, I feel like the racket is also going to fly off when I do an extra large and fast swing!
I notice that Europeans (including ethnic asians who have learnt badminton in Europe) tend to favour wider diameter grips relative to their hand size. Of course, this is a very general observation. Perhaps a lot of people crossover with tennis with which you definitely need a bigger sized handle. I used to have a large diameter grip. Then I was taking some lessons and found it hard to copy the coach in doing some hold and flick shots and manoevering the racquet head for smashes. Since the coach and I were around the same height and build, I wondered if any other factors could be at hand. I had a look at his racquet and was astounded to find the handle so thin. Later that evening, I took a few layers off the handle. Took a bit of time to get used to. I find I prefer smaller sized grip for doubles and a marginally larger grip for singles. If I see people having difficulty moving their racquets around, I can't resist asking them to reduce the size of their grip.
