PASIR GUDANG: Former Asian Junior champion Soo Teck Zhi scored his first upset win in senior ranks when he dumped professional Mohd Arif Abdul Latif to reach the men’s singles quarter-finals in the Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold at the Pasir Gudang Municipal Stadium.
The 19-year-old Teck Zhi showed great aggression when he ended his former senior Arif’s gallant run in the GP Gold with a convincing 21-12, 21-15 win.
Arif had beaten top seed Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk of Thailand a a day ago.
After Thursday’s win, Teck Zhi vowed to give his next opponent, former world No. 3 Simon Santoso of Indonesia, a run for his money.
“Everyone is looking for the next Lee Chong Wei and I hope to be the one. Give me another one or two years,” said a confident Teck Zhi.
Happened to be at a level IV world tournament and saw Soo Teck Zhi vs Chia Hung Lu, who is almost 40 places above him in the BWF rankings (but 2 years younger). From what I see STZ's stamina is not passable at international level (goes for most of the other Malaysian singles players, they are simply outlasted in the game). He played a very athletic and attacking game at the start, then went out of steam and temperamental in the second set and tried to slow the pace to ridiculous levels. Lu Chia Hung played a very patient and clear headed game.
There was an incident of getting tapped in front of the net in which the birdie hit his forearm. He used that as an excuse to towel down, and did the same minutes later pointing to the same spot on his arm. In the rubber set he even made a big deal on a net call which he clearly smashed 1-2 feet out. He was harassing the umpire quite a bit. Incidentally, he beat the 17 year old Chia Hung last year pretty easily. I wonder why the stark difference in stamina and composure this time.
Just saw his game against boonsak ponsana at the purple league just now. Obviously his skills and physical strength has improved. Seems to me a better player than dzulfadly or will be better soon. Match temperament can be better. Certainly made boonsak earn his win. Definitely a much more exciting player to watch now. Hopefully he won't fizzle out like the others
