I'm a bit confused about the service rules. My understanding is that the racket head is supposed to be below the hand, pointing downward when you hit the shuttle and you should hit it below the hip. But I've seen many intl players hit the shuttle above the hip, e.g. Yoo Yong Sung, the Korean men's doubles player. Service judges seem inconsistent in enforcing the rules.

Also, it happened to me twice that the shuttle got stuck on the net band, just after it went over the net. Since it never touched the floor, it should still be in play, so should you ask for a let or continue to play? Very awkward to hit the shuttle without touching the net, though.

see the rules/laws at www.worlbadminton.net
laws

you should find that the shuttle has to be below the waist at the time of first contact,
but there is no official definition of where the waist is.
It has been said that service judges use the height of your elbow joint when your arm is hanging at your side as a guide.

If, in a rally, the shuttle passes over the net and then gets stuck on the net, it is a let. Also a let if it gets stuck on top of the net.

If, on service, the shuttle passes over the net and then gets stuck on the net, it is a fault. Also a fault if it gets stuck on top of the net, or on servers side of the net.

it is the waist, not the hip.

an alternative definition of the waist is at the lowest part of the rib cage.

but honestly, i think the elbow is a better definition as 1) it is easier to spot. and 2) i find that at least for my case, they come to around the same height...

Just a question, are you allowed to hit it diagonally, using the face of the racquet to direct it that way??

Thanks folks, I found the 'rules and laws' page and it's very helpful. My so-called badminton expert friends have given me so much bogus info over the years. They turned out not be experts at all.

If you take the elbow joint as a reference point, the waist should be around the belly button (I checked in the mirror).

Hello There,

Members of www.thaibadminton.com has discussed about
the service rule in the same way as "novl" starting this topic. We still has not reached the conclusion about serving. Why some international players serve with their racket head above their waist discernibly?
Any post for this B.C. 2007?
Thanks.
K

No answer yet! :-o

And I wonder about the rule 9.1.7.

9.1.7 The movement of the server’s racket shall continue forwards from the start of the service (Law 9.4) until the service is delivered.

What does "...shall continue forwards.." mean?
No stop of the raquet movement?

:)

the rule book only talks about the hand that holds the racket. my question is, are you allowed to move the hand holding the shuttle during service? or, are you allowed to make any other movements at all or is it limited to the hitting arm?
