    We should just enjoy watching the game... and appreciate the players for their efforts and dedication and sacrifices that they have put into their training and their passion of the game of badminton.

    It is their full mind and body on the line when they compete on the court. I just don't understand why we should mess around by slowing their shuttle speeds on purpose, eg at the recent Victor China Open.

    Arrow Approximate time for a game

    When you are researching, do pay attention to what event matches (MS, WS, MD, WD or XD) you are studying in detail.

    And then, perhaps calculate the AVERAGE TIME for each game (not for each match). Why? Because we don't know if a match is going to be 2-games or a 3-games match. And, usually the 3rd game takes longer than the 1st or the 2nd game.

    My experience tells me the approximate time for each game is :
    * MS - 20 minutes
    * WS - 20 minutes
    * MD - 15 minutes
    * WD - 15 minutes
    * XD - 15 minutes

    At the 2013 Hong Kong Open yesterday (Round of 16), this is what I have calculated;

    AVERAGE TIME taken for each game
    * MS - 19.42 minutes
    * WS - 18.05 minutes
    * MD - 17.10 minutes
    * WD - 16.44 minutes
    * XD - 16.67 minutes

    Calculation is based on data taken from this source: http://www.tournamentsoftware.com/sp...E21&d=20131121

    Default Analysis of time taken in Round 2 or Round of 16 matches

    HONG KONG OPEN 2013 R2 MATCHES
    TIME TAKEN

    Match 1
    2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Total Average

    MS 41
    27 90 49 34 32 36 60 369 46.125

    WS 59 49 30 57 34 65 35 32 361 45.125

    MD 60 60 23 31 47 30 50 41 342 42.75

    WD 51 31 27 30 36 23 36 29 263 32.875

    XD 45
    59 41 32 27 24 29 43 300 37.5

    TOTAL TIME TAKEN FOR ALL MATCHES: 1,635 MINUTES.

    AVERAGE TIME PER MATCH: 40.875 MINUTES.

    LONGEST TIME: 90M IN MS K. TAGO BEAT HU YUN 18-21, 21-19, 25-23.

    SHORTEST TIME: 23M IN MD LEE/LEE BEAT CHAN/LO 21-120, 21-12 AND
    IN WD WANG/YU BEAT CHENG/HSIEH 21-16, 21-10.

    WE SHOULD EXPECT MATCHES TO BE SLIGHTLY LONGER FOR THE QF TODAY AS THE PLAYERS ARE LIKELY TO BE MORE SKILFUL AND MORE EVENLY MATCHED, UNLESS INJURY SETS IN TO END THE MATCH PREMATURELY.

    Using Loh's summarised data, I worked out +/- 2 standard error of the mean for the round 16 matches.

    MS mean= 46 mins (22, 60)
    WS mean= 45 mins (35, 55)
    MD mean= 43 mins (33,53)
    WD mean = 33 mins (27, 39)
    XD mean = 37 mins (29, 45)

    This means we should expect more than 95% of all matches to last between 22 and 60 mins.

    The smallest spread (i.e. most predictable timings) are in WD

    The most unpredictable is MS with 95% of matches expected to last between 22 and 60mins

    LOL... BCers are alert to read my posts.

    Some asked how I worked out the AVERAGE TIME taken for each game.

    This is how I made my calculations : I studied the time taken separately for each discipline (MS, WS, MD, WD, and XD).

    These are the results (after an hour of calculating time) :

    * MS event:
    5 matches are 2-games, 3 matches are 3-games. Found that:
    Average minutes per game in a 2-games match = 17:00 minutes.
    Average minutes per game in a 3-games match = 22:11 minutes.
    Average minutes per game in all 8 matches = 19.42 minutes.

    * WS event:
    4 matches are 2-games, 4 matches are 3-games. Found that:
    Average minutes per game in a 2-games match = 16:38 minutes.
    Average minutes per game in a 3-games match = 19.17 minutes.
    Average minutes per game in all 8 matches = 18.05 minutes.

    * MD event:
    4 matches are 2-games, 4 matches are 3-games. Found that:
    Average minutes per game in a 2-games match = 15:63 minutes.
    Average minutes per game in a 3-games match = 18.08 minutes.
    Average minutes per game in all 8 matches = 17.10 minutes.

    * WD event:
    8 matches are 2-games, no match is of 3-games. Found that:
    Average minutes per game in a 2-games match = 16:44 minutes.
    Average minutes per game in all 8 matches = 16.44 minutes.

    * XD event:
    6 matches are 2-games, 2 matches are of 3-games. Found that:
    Average minutes per game in a 2-games match = 16:50 minutes.
    Average minutes per game in a 3-games match = 17.00 minutes.
    Average minutes per game in all 8 matches = 16.67 minutes.

    Definitely interesting stuff.

    It's a pity we don't have the data from past tournaments on the old scoring system.

    Loh's hypothesis of longer matches is plausible therefore I would be interested in grouping those matches from round 8 to finals as one subset (because these are the seeded positions).

    .
    Don't worry.

    BWF is happy when each game lasts (on average) at or below 20 minutes.

    As for me, an average of 20 minutes for a game is good (to follow).

    From the above table one would expect the matches to become progressively longer, as more players are more evenly matched. There are exceptions of course, like the early retirement of TS against Sony and the mismatch between LCW and Boonsak during the MS SF.

    During the semifinals, the average time taken per match was 42.6 minutes, though longer than in R2 (40.875 minutes), but shorter than QF (44.6m) and F (54.4m). The reason is given above.

    As expected, the Finals took up the longest time as 3 of the 5 matches went to 3 games. The shortest match was again between LCW and Sony (34m) as the former was in good form as the No.1 seed.
