    Hi All,

Just started playing badminton again and not sure about some badminton etiquette.

    1. If the shuttle hits the net and drops for a winner - do you have to apologize?

    2. How does using feather shuttles work - everyone brings a tube and just rotate using a new shuttle? What happens to the old ones?

    3. The club I am playing at people don't shake hands they hit racquets - aren't some of these racquets expensive - not sure I want slam racquets - is there proper way to clash these racquets?

    Thanks in advance

    1. I always apologise and the same goes if you get a point off the frame.
    2. When I've played socially, we all chip in for shuttles. I play at clubs though so my fees pay for club shuttles.
    3. Shake hands or high five, if you or anyone hits my racquet like that I will hurt them.

hitting racket seems to be a kids thing.

i have seen high school kids, after winning a rally they will lightly hit each others rackets. i cringe upon seeing it. i guess they don't pay for their own rackets!

    1. i always apologize. if i do a good netshot that cuts the net, it may happen that i cheer first and apologize afterwards...;-)
    2. in my club, we get the shuttles in training. in my former club, everyone brought shuttles, evenly distibuted. old shuttles usually go into a box everyone in the club may use for multifeeding or stuff. if it's just social play, you may keep you good used shuttles for practice and throw away the bad ones...
    3. i've never seen racket-hand-shakes, seems ridiculous. anyway: if you gently touch each others rackets, it's def no problem for the racket. so you have to decide whether you like that habit or not...

I am just picturing a bunch of bc'ers going to play a match against this club, 5 courts or something and all the games end at the same time, bc'ers go up to the net to high five and instead they all get their rackets hit. It would just be a violent mass riot:D

    1. Yes
    2. depends just don't leave anyone out of pocket

i think the image you've set about BCers playing and ending a their matches all at the same time is very funny :)

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm loving playing badminton again.
I noticed in some pro - matches people don't apologize on net shots - so I thought maybe it's considered a great shot as opposed to lucky as in Tennis or Table Tennis.

Racquet shakehands - I'm playing with not so expensive racquet - so not a big issue for me, If I had an expensive one - I might be against it. From hypochondriac point of view - I kind a like - since quite few people have colds and flu's during the winter season - rather not pick any of that up.

that is a very good point, about people being sick, especially when the players still have sweaty hands that's where the germs are! maybe i should start banging rackets :(

Suppose, especially on tight spinning net shots close to the net the pro's can tape it regularly so not really that lucky. Let's put it this way, it is most certainly good etiquette to apologise but not really frowned upon if you don't. If you can hit the tape every shot you can stop apologising since that would be just straight up skill.:)

Ok, that's it - right after I stop framing my shots (which I am constantly apologizing), I'm aiming for the tape!

Really, you can do that.....I was wondering why I was framing so many shots....it's the shuttles - it never even occurred to me....hey I'm getting good at this!:D

As a feather shuttle nears its end, it'll slow down or wobble causing you to mistime the shot. If that fails, blame your partner for putting you off.

not all pro have good etiquette. in fact, some of them are outright poor at it.

but that doesn't mean it is ok. it only means they are setting bad examples for others to follow. we should always strive to have good etiquette.

Some folks here bump fists to limit the germ-transfer of a handshake or high-five. It's comical at the end of a game when each player wants to do something different.

Immune system's in great shape with three kids? But how's your bank balance? :p

Didn't Lin Dan in one game lose his sets (while sponsored by yonex) he didn't shake hands and got angry and kicked his racket up in the air and ended up hitting the other player ...
