Such talent. Why did she leave China for HK in the first place? Was she ever in the China team. A pity she hasn't won more majors other than the 2003 ABC. Did she face any Chinese competitor in that win? But now, age is catching up on her. Hopefully, like Zhang Ning, she can overcome this through hard training for fitness and agility, something I found a little lacking in her.
Since Wang Chen plays women singles, I guess it doesn't really matter to her whether she plays for Hong Kong or China. After all, Hong Kong is still part of China, plus, she probably gets more chances and freedom to represent Hong Kong than she would have if she remained in China. -Rick
I think she was, and I heard some rumors about her. Things like she could not be the coach's favorite, as she's does not have consistency in her game (at least, earlier yrs). As we know, the internal competition in CHN team could be cruel (even tougher than most of the "Open"), WC might just want to find her own destiny.
I think she can be a better player if she is trained back withthe China Team. She has been consistent with her performance.. but alot of womens are catching up. She need to improve more.
Not sure how much of this is true but... I heard that she applied for residency in Australia, just so she could get out of China and represent Hong Kong. Since then Badminton Australia has tightened the rules on overseas players applying for residency in AUS based on their badminton skills. Does anyone know more about this?
A few rumours about this, they were bitten once with Rio (he one, one GP - Polish Open), who was such a promise but failed at Olympics losing to a Bulgarian doubles player in his first match!
Yes some problems with coach etc, was in the National team! Her boyfriend is Zheng Yu Min (Men's doubles coach for the last few years, 2002 Thomas Cup coach and 2004 Thomas Cup coach).
Sounds like she was in the same generation as Ye, Gong and Dai Yun. Maybe she doesn't want to be the #4 in the Chinese team.
I just noticed her birthday is same as mine. Just I'm a few more years older. Here is record against the top players for Chen Wang 1976 Dai Yun 1977: 3 - 2 Gong Zhichao: 1977: 1 - 3 Ye Zhaoying: 1974: 0 - 5 Bang Soo Hyun: 1972: 0 - 1 Camilla Martin 1974: 5 - 8
The information I had Wang Chen was regarded as Ye Zhaoying replacement and potential leading lady singles player for China. Her skills are very good but needed improvement on the physical aspect. Things looked good for her until she got a serious which took a lengthly recovery. After that she never recovered her previous form and had difficulty playing against the newer players. I believe this led to her decision to leave China.
Humm.... any idea what's happened to Rio now? I think Wang Chen left China around the same time Rio got the green light to play in the Olympics
Don't know what has happened to Rio. Maybe the Melborune BF's can help - Pecheur (?), AYL etc or probably Iwan as he sounds like an Indonesian student. By the way where are you located?
Oh, okay. Just though from your comments you might have been in Melbourne. By the way what clubs are you playing at?
Heard rumor about Wang Chen cannot participate in 2004 Olympic Games because she still not get the HK permanent resident status. (It needs to live in HK at least 7 yrs, but now is her fifth year in HK.) The regulation set by International Olympic Games Committee about player represents the area must got the permanent citizenship in that area first. If it is true, we will not see her play in this Summer in Athens. So disappointed!
