Does anyone know how the runners-up were selected for the 1/4 final in the Men's team event? There were slots for 6 group leaders and 2 runners-up. The first 4 groups had 4 teams each, the last 2 had 5 teams each. After the tight clash between France and Ukraine the latter emerged victorious in the Group 6, but the group result was equal for France, Ukraine and the Netherlands - 17 matches won, 3 lost. I'm surprised to see Russia proceed to the 1/4 final with 12-3 matches won, rather than the Netherlands.

 

Perhaps because results of all matches of the last team in the group with 5 teams is not included?

 

Well, no, France was in the same situation in Group 6 and it didn't prevent her to become the best runner-up. According to Appendix III it should be:
8.7.1 The best group runner(-s) up listed under 8.7 shall be found by taking the following in
consideration, in listed order:
• Tie difference
• Match difference
• Game difference
• Point difference
• Draw by lots
8.7.2 The in 8.7.1 only applies if there is the same number of teams in each group. If there is a
difference in the number of teams in the groups, the lowest ranked team in the groups with most teams,
will not be taken into the calculation.

 

Then why did France qualify and what does the lowest ranked mean?

 

The matches against the team that finished last in the group don't count. That leaves for example France with 12-3 games as well.

First semifinal match (01.00pm local time) : England v Germany should be close and interesting to watch.

 

Womens semifinal RUS vs GER turned into such a mess. Could have gone either way. 3 of the 5 matches lasted over the hour. Anastasia Chervaykova might be the heroine of the day, helping to bring in 2 of the 3 points. Russia into final will face Denmark. Without a strong leader in Tine Baun this match feels more open, but the new Danish singles players are up for the challenge. I guess Denmark is the favourites but I expect this one to go all the way 5 matches.

 

Second seed GER team failed to reach final in both Men's & Women's teams, as ENG and RUS will contest against strong fave DEN today.
