We will know who will not take part on 22/23 May. Deadline for entry is 20 May, I think M&Q will be published about 3 days later.

You can check BWF update of this new SS => http://www.bwfbadminton.org/tournamentcalendar_event.aspx?id=18140

I guess most of top players will not skip this first ever SS tournament in Aussie with that so lucrative prize money :D

750K prize money. Is it the highest among all SS? How come it's not SSP?

Because of other criteria that need to be satisfied. It's not just about prize money. There is organisation, facilities to players and a host of other details.

If they run the super series smoothly, provide great viewing facilities for public and TV and get lots of attendance, I can well imagine them getting Super Series Premier status - if they want it.

Australia was offering one million for the SSP but had to settle for an SS, yet till putting up 750K for it. Other than AE with the rich history on its side, the other hosts for SSPs are current badminton powers. It would be a little awkward to give an SSP to nation whose only recognizable face for badminton is a cutie for her looks but not her game.

While it's good to get something going in Australia, the big prize remains in the Americas. It is probably too late now, but BWF should still do something, with Rio Olympics coming up. Maybe securing some big names for a special test event in Brazil with rich prizes.

Which one are you referring to? Past or present :)

The cutie is in the present although she is no where as recognizable as her great grandfather in the past.

Also, my apologies if I overlooked any BC luminaries residing in Australia :)

You will have to go back 6-8 years for the other 'cutie'. It would be nice for Australia to produce more badminton players!

Australia was featured in Episode 8 of Badminton Unlimited 2014. The old magazine show was not bad but Badminton Unlimited is good and vastly timelier.

Obviously, a show about Australia badminton must include the face of Australia badminton:

Just curious, who is the face of Australian badminton? Gabrielle Adcock or Gronya Somerville or somebody else?

Interestingly, Alan Budikusuma's favourite player now is Lin Dan though his sporting hero is Rudy Hartono (as expected). I remember reading P V Sindhu's (who appeared at the end of the video as the following week's subject) idol is also Lin Dan.

As for this AUS SS, I can understand BWF's consideration for not wanting it to be upgraded straight to Premier status but I really look forward to it becoming a commendable success and, hopefully, one day rise to Premier level as I am optimistic it would.

AuStralia will follow INA in term of money...during the meeting..AUS insisted to pair with INA premier as they hope any players come to in a will go to Australia as well as there are so many flights from Jakarta , Bali and Singapore to Sydney..then because of Asian games and Commonwealth games, Japan came along and we did ask Japan not to be in June and at that time Japan did not know that Australia will increase the prize money and now Japan SS is a bit worried ..

    Interesting.

Few will do three SS in a row. Since Indonesia is mandatory, many will have to choose between Japan and Australia. Australia has money on its side. But Japan has Yonex.

Who is the title sponsor for Australia this year? It was Yonex last year so LCW showed up.

The venue is kinda far from town, isn't it? The Sydney Olympic Park is a huge place.

    Still Yonex. Hasn't changed.

Having Australian Open upgrade from GPG to SS is definitely great for us spectators in Australia. But no quite so for the players - who need to travel a long way and made compulsory to play because of the title sponsors and top 10? players to be fined if they avoid the tournament.

It's a good move for us, but not quite sure it's going to be any more inviting for players to come (except for the prize money) and also Australia is yet to have a player with any kind of face or reputation in the game.

Lets hope our lads can pick up their games.

Top 10 players are only compulsory to attend the premier SS. But they need to attend a minimum number of SS.(Can't remember).

They can skip a few SS

I think English players will skip Australian open to prepare themselves for Commonwealth Games...ENG will play Japan and INA Open.

Australia is also in the Commonwealth. Wouldn't it be funny if the Australians don't show up themselves, along with NZ, MAS, etc.

It is up to ENg to participate..no need to make fun of it....just know for sure they will fly to JPN then INA then back to UK..whatever their reason..there is a chance they won't play at AUS open
