I'm a new member and this is my first post. This is a great forum, wished I had found it earlier. As a Malaysian, I'm particularly interested in whether we can send three men's singles entries to the Olympics. After the Swiss Open, the major tournaments left are All England, Korean, Japan and Asian Champs (also Euro Champs). I built a database (a lot of data entry) and from there, I can compile the rankings for the top 30 players or so, only taking into consideration points from 1 May 2003 onwards. After the recent Swiss Open, this is the result I get. Sorry if there is a bias towards Malaysian players. Among those out of the top 16, Taufik and Sony can most easily break into the top 16 as they have played in very few tournaments so far. Also, there are 3 Danish and 5! Chinese players in the top 16

After the Korean Open, the rankings for Olympics looks like this (maybe not 100% perfect but should be close). Taking away two chinese means the list can go down to no.18. Kenneth 'looks' safe. Wonder if Agus and Boonsak can do enough to keep above Sato.
Apparently, the list cannot go down to no. 18. Kenneth should be safe if he keeps above Boesen. But Boesen is safe only if he can maintain his top 16 position. But Taufik is hot on his heels even if he doesn't really need a top 16 position to qualify. Booksak and Agus should not need top 16 positions to qualify as well, virtue of being no 1 and no 2 for their country respectively. Sato should qualify easily as well. I think among those jut outside the cut-off point, Park Tae Sang will have the most incentive to get the top 16 position. Two more tournaments left. Japan Open and then continental championships. Is it fair that the European and Asian championships are both rated 4 star? If the fight for berth between Park and Boesen goes down the wire, surely, Boesen will have an easier time.
Pardon me, but I read recently that the Olympics can take in 20+ competitors. So if each country is limited to the top 3 highest IBF ranking players, China will have to forego Chen Yu and either Bao or Xia. Xia is making a very strong comeback after winning the Korea Open, thanks to Chen Hong, and may well upstage Bao in the end, ie, after the ABC in KL if both are participating in this event plus the Japan Open, starting tomorrow. The world's top 16 at that stage, minus any excesses to the 3 player-limit rule, can be assured of a place, unless they have to withdraw through injury. Of course, 16 qualifiers will be just nice for a Draw, but having say ten more will give other players a change to soak in the Olympic atmosphere and a personal motivation to fight for the last available places.
Don't quite understand what you mean. I take it that you think only the top 16 can qualify for the Olympics. Not so. In the end, at least 29 (but probably just 29) will qualify for the men's singles event in the Olympics. http://www.worldbadminton.net/Portal/documents/ogqualregs.PDF for more details. The top 16 is only good for countries wanting the maximum 3 participants in the event.

Thanks for clarification. Yes, I understand that more than 16 will qualify and now you indicated the figure to be 29 and who are the probable qualifiers.
Incidentally, http://www.worldbadminton.net/Portal/documents/Dummy_MS_040401.htm. IBF came out with the third and final dummy list, and I think my "dummy" list is the same as IBF's with the exception of the Greek (host) player.
Thin margin between Park Tae Sang and Anders Boesen for third representation of respective countries. All goes down the wire in continental championships. Both the Euro and Asian championships are 4-star rated. If Park at least matches Boesen's stage (ie. if Boesen gets to last 8, and Park gets to last 8 or better), then Park goes through. That's because Park's 10th best tournament gives him 105 points while Boesen's give him 120. This is all based on my calculation which has been known to be wrong before. Only points after 1 May 2003 are taken into account. Thanks for this hcyong. Looks like Malaysia will have all 3 representatives if your calculations are correct. Same goes to China and Korea. Denmark and Indo will not have all 3 from the looks of it. I hope Choong Hann and company will buck up. However, one theory I have about Choong Hann is that he is fine tuning himself to peak for Olympics, that's why he is not firing his cylinders now.

Well according to my calculation, after the semi-final stage of the Euro and the quarters of the Asian, Roslin and especially Lee CW just made it to the top 16. In fact Lee CW could finish 16th. Boesen is already out. His loss to Peter Gade in the semi did him bad. Either they were not calculating properly or the Danes really played it fair. By my calculation Park Tae Sang has already qualified, at least at the 16th spot.
I don't think the Danes play for "team victories" like some other countries (China, Korea...). Whatever the situation, Peter Gade would never have left Anders Boesen win that match! Same thing for the english players with Robertson/Emms beating Archer/Kellogg which might prevent them from going to the olympics... (though I think they still have a chance) Probably Europeans are more "individualistic" I suppose...
