[h=2]Nick Butler: Why Chinese table tennis dominance will not end anytime soon[/h]Monday, 28 April 2014
Share on facebookShare on twitterShare on emailMore Sharing Services4

[IMG]Speaking as part of an extensive interview with insidethegames,International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) President Adham Sharara has claimed ever-increasing Chinese dominance is a "major problem" in the sport.

He then revealed plans to relinquish the Presidency in September for a new chairman role aimed at generating higher standards among the rest of the world.

But, whatever shape these plans take, my instinct is they will not bring about widespread change as the most one-nation-dominated Olympic sport stays that way for a good while yet.

When I first started following table tennis a decade ago, Austria's Werner Schlager had just earned a shock victory at the 2003 World Championships, before South Korean prodigy Ryu Seung Min spun and looped his way to the Athens Olympic title the following year.

But the decade since has seen precious little success for the rest-of-the-world with Chinese players having won the last five world singles titles along with a medals clean sweep at Beijing 2008. And when the number of players from each country was reduced to two at London 2012, they still managed gold and silver.

In the women's game, the Chinese have been even more dominant in winning all seven Olympic singles titles and every world singles title since 1993. The only blemish was a rather fluky victory by Singapore at the 2010 World Team Championships in Moscow, and even that was achieved with a team consisting of players born in China.

The latest world rankings see Chinese players hold the top five places and six of the top seven in the men's singles, as well as seven of the top eight in the women's singles. And if there were not limitations on the number of players from each country who can play in each international event, they would probably dominate to an even greater degree.

But while a system, like in tennis, where players usually represent themselves rather than their nation would arguably lend itself to even greater Chinese domination, it is precisely this national team identity which makes players from the world's most populous country so dominant.

    ...

So while Chinese dominance is a concern, it is a reality which will not go away anytime soon, and I would advise Adham Sharara and the ITTF to seek ways to work with this reality for the improvement of the global game, rather than working against it.

Nick Butler is a reporter for insidethegames who used to play table tennis at a very modest standard.

Adham Sharara Leaves ITTF Presidency | Table Tennista

    Adham Sharara Leaves ITTF Presidency

    Romina Concha - April 29, 2014

After years in the highest place of International Table Tennis Federation, Adham Sharara announced that he will leave the presidency. This is unexpected news, because he was just reelected last year in Paris 2013, but he wants to remain in ITTF helping Europe and rest of the world to shorten the gap with China.

On Sunday Adham Sharara revealed to the website insidethegames.biz that he will leave the presidency of the International Table Tennis Federation after 15 years. This is a surprise, because he was just reelected for his last period last year in the World Championships held in Paris.

But Mr. Sharara won't leave his position right now, he will leave in September and since then ITTF will be led by Thomas Weikert, Head of the German Federation and currently Deputy President of ITTF.

Leaving the presidency doesn't mean that he will abandon Table Tennis as well. In fact, he will stay in the International Federation. Mr. Sharara wants to be the new position of ITTF chairman.

But why did Adham Sharara decided to quit? He told it to the web site: "At this stage in my life, and after 15 years of being President of the ITTF, preceded by four years as Deputy President, this new position would suit me perfectly. This would keep me involved in the ITTF but without the day-to-day operational responsibilities that I have now."

Mr. Sharara also explained which would be his major task as ITTF chairman: "I intend to take time out from the ITTF Presidency by retiring this September and spending more time independently to help Europe and other parts of the world to rise and challenge the Chinese dominance."

"I believe that this will generate a lot of interest in our sport and will make for a healthier balance. Of course the Chinese deserve the results they are getting because of their very hard work and dedication to excellence. But at the same time to make any sport interesting we need a rivalry and unpredictable results. It will take time, but eventually it will happen."

The women event gave a lot of surprises in the 5th day of competition at the 2014 World Team Championships. Chinese Taipeh stirs an upset beating South Korea in Men's QF

South Korea Fails To Proceed Into The Semifinals

    Patrick Tan, May 3, 2014

South Korea and Chinese Taipei met in the arena of Yoyogi Stadium for the second time in the 2014 World Team Championships. This time, it was for the place in the semifinals. Although Joo Sae Hyuk, Cho Eon Rae and Jung Young Sik gave their all into the match, it was Chuang Chih Yuan's Chinese Taipei who stood victorious.

ITTF. The 2014 World Team Championships continued its men's quarterfinal round today with South Korea fighting against Chinese Taipei.

    ...

Joo Sae Hyuk returned into the arena for the fourth match and this time, he was facing a much harder opponent, Chuang Chih Yuan. In the Group Stage of the competition, Joo Sae Hyuk has defeated Chuang. Today, as their match progressed, Joo Sae Hyuk struggled a little bit.

However. Chuang's early control didn't set the pace of the match. Joo Sae Hyuk managed to snatch the opener and maintained momentum into the second set. He now was in a 2-0 advantage. Chuang Chih Yuan fought harder in the third set sensing danger as Joo Sae Hyuk took on the bigger rallies. With unbelievable patience, Chuang Chih Yuan got the set.

Eventually, Chuang's recovery led to a big momentum and was able to successfully level in 2-2. They reached the decider and the tides have turned. Chuang Chih Yuan was dominating in 6-0. Unfortunately, Joo Sae Hyuk was not able to come back into the game. Chuang Chih Yuan sealed the match with 9-11, 6-11, 14-12, 11-6, 11-2.

The deciding match was between two young players, both aged 22: Jung Young Sik and Chen Chien An, coming from defeats earlier in the battle. Between the two, Chen Chien An was more aggressive. Jung Young Sik got his moments but consistency was the problem. Chen Chien An finished the match with 11-6, 6-11, 11-7, 11-9.

Chinese Taipei progresses into the semifinals while South Korea misses the round for the first time since 2004.

    Note:

    - from the commentator's info, the last time CHN's women team failed to play in the finals was in 1963.

    - In women's semifinals JPN beat HKG through dramatic matches as indicated by the very tight scores, indeed the JPN team made great revivals to victory from the brink of defeat. Supposed JPN failed to win the 4th match and had tie at 2-2, the 5th match most likely would go to HKG. JIANG Huajun has a clean, dominant H2H record over Yuka ISHIGAKI, she never lose one single game to the JPN player in their two encounters. Today's star is definitely Kasumi ISHIKAWA, she just repeats her stardom performance as in the QF beating Britt EERLAND 3-2 in the 5th match to bring the victory to the host team.

Tomorrow (5/5) CHN will play against GER in men's finals at 16:30; while the women's finals will see CHN vs JPN at 19:30.

As usual the Live Streaming can be watched directly from the ITTF at http://ittf.com/ittv/

China Beats Germany For The Men's World Championship Title

    .
China Beats Germany For The Men's World Championship Title

    Patrick Tan, May 5, 2014

It was once again a China versus Germany in the final round of a world competition. Though China had their most powerful players on board, Germany wasn't an easy team especially with Dimitrij Ovtcharov who was in a very good condition. In the match, he swept Zhang Jike. But against Ma Long, it was hard. At the end, China defended the championship title.

ITTF. The 2014 World Team Championships has come to its conclusion and for the Men's Team event, China literally battled against the challenge from Germany.

The opening match was between high-calibre players: Ma Long and Timo Boll. Their match started intense which forced both teams to call for their respective timeout in the second set. Ma Long was at set point first in 10-9. With a little luck, Ma Long sealed a 2-0 advantage.

At this point, Ma Long was in a favourable situation but there was no point relaxing. In 2010 Moscow World Team Championships, Timo Boll was able to reverse a 0-2 deficit to a 3-2 victory over Ma Long. Indeed, Timo Boll showed good signs of recovery as he led in 5-2. The critical point here is if Boll can maintain his lead.

Well, Boll lost his advantage. Scores levelled in 8-8 and then Ma Long was in match point: 10-9. With a good service, Ma Long sealed the match in 11-6, 11-9, 11-9.

Another table tennis spectacle followed in the final match: Zhang Jike against Dimitrij Ovtcharov. The German player was the first player to got all fired up with a commanding 6-0. But, Zhang Jike crept up and closed the gap in 7-7, forcing Germany to call for a timeout.

Ovtcharov was in set point in 10-8 then Zhang Jike saved two points to 10-10. A service error from Zhang Jike gave a free point to Germany but quickly, it was recovered. Despite the resistance of Zhang Jike, Ovtcharov got the opening set.

As the match progressed, Ovtcharov clearly was controlling the game. He has the momentum making the Grand Slam champion struggling for point. Seeing his player still not picking up, head coach Liu Guoliang called for a timeout. The timeout didn't serve well for China as Zhang Jike found himself in a 0-2 deficit.

Zhang Jike continued to be lost in the match giving all the opportunities to his German opponent. Of course, Ovtcharov took advantage and completed a sweep win in 13-11, 11-8, 11-6.

Following an unconditioned Zhang Jike, the third player for the Chinese Team, Xu Xin started off with power against Patrick Franziska forcing Germany to call for a timeout in the second set. The timeout didn't work at all as points continued to rush in favour of Xu Xin.

Xu Xin still had the overall momentum into the third set but when Patrick Franziska was taking a few points close, Liu Guoliang called for a timeout. After the game resumed, Franziska trailed in 8-9. But then Xu Xin did not waiver and sealed a powerful 11-5, 11-2, 11-8.

At this point, China was in 2-1 and Dimitrij Ovtcharov needed to repeat his successful performance earlier to keep Germany alive in the battle. But his mission wasn't easy facing Ma Long in the fourth match. Indeed he didn't get that much control this time as Ma Long was also strong in the match. It was an intense start in 10-10 before Ma Long survived.

Ovtcharov may have come more than adequately prepared for battle but Ma Long was like a machine in the match. With a 2-0 lead, Ma Long still had the control forcing Germany to call for timeout. Unfortunately, it didn't stop Ma Long.

Ovtcharov had to concede as Ma Long sealed the final battle with 12-10, 11-5, 11-2.

Though encountered some difficulties in the round, China still emerged victorious and retained the Swaythling Cup.

** Dimitrij OVTCHAROV had an outstanding appearance today, he crushed ZHANG Jike completely. Only MA Long played superbly in today's finals... he's really the star among the stars!!

China Defends Women's World Team Championships Title

    .
China Defends Women's World Team Championships Title

    Patrick Tan, May 5, 2014

The Japanese Women's Team has indeed stayed true to their word: they will be in the finals. As the 2014 World Team Championships got to its concluding stage, Japan faced the defending champions China. Kasumi Ishikawa, Yuka Ishigaki, and Sayaka Hirano fight for the crowd but their efforts did not shake their Chinese opponents to winning the title.

ITTF. The Women's Team event of the 2014 World Team Championships boiled down to China and Japan. Although the Japanese gave a good fight, China was just indestructible.

Ding Ning was the first player for the Chinese Team in the arena and she faced the defensive player Yuka Ishigaki. There was no problem in the opening set but not in the second game. Looking on previous records, Ding Ning has difficulties against defensive player and it showed as Ishigaki levelled in 1-1.

But the Japanese player wasn't able to maintain her stance against the world champion Ding Ning. At the end, Ding Ning offered the first point for China with 11-5, 8-11, 11-2, 11-5.

The pride of the Japanese Women's Team Kasumi Ishikawa was the second player into the arena. She has been through and has survived a lot in this competition but probably her biggest test was this match, facing a Grand Slam champion, Li Xiaoxia.

Kasumi Ishikawa had a good chance in the opening set, leading in 7-3. But one can not just expect a Grand Slam champion to easily back down. Li Xiaoxia recovered and overtook to taking the first advantage.

As the match progressed, Kasumi Ishikawa wasn't able to gain a good lead anymore. Li Xiaoxia was in control making it hard for Ishikawa to win the rallies. Li Xiaoxia took advantage and scored 11-8, 11-7, 11-7.

The third match was between Liu Shiwen and Sayaka Hirano. This match was vital for the Chinese player who needs to prove her capabilities in the team competition, erasing all the doubts that have surfaced in the Moscow World Team Championships.

With this in mind, Liu Shiwen started off strongly making her Japanese opponent feeling helpless in different levels. There was this strong determination and power from Liu Shiwen which were too overwhelming for Sayaka Hirano.

Liu Shiwen finsihed off the match with 11-4, 11-2, 11-5.

Eventually, China showed that they are still the most powerful team in the women's division as they defended the championship title.

** These women's finals were much more one sided business unlike the men's ones, they simply lacked any thriller!

Zhang Jike continued to play at subpar level in team events recently. I wonder why the Chinese coaches did not use the consistent Wang Hao or the explosive Fan Zhendong.

Qidong, after verifying the H2H records between Zhang Jike and Wang Hao against both Timo Boll and Dimitrij Ovtcharov, I also wonder why the coaches didn't play Wang Hao instead, esp. since Zhang played less convincingly in earlier stages.

H2H records (not includes today's match)

    Zhang Jike - Dimitrij Ovtcharov 3 - 1
    Zhang Jike - Timo Boll 4 - 2

    WANG Hao - Timo Boll 10 - 4
    WANG Hao - Dimitrij Ovtcharov 6 - 1

Btw, do you know the ITTF rules for the team event, how to determine the ORDER of lineup?
I wonder why Xu Xin who has WR #1 played as the single #3 while Ma Long WR#2 played as single #1 and Zhang Jike WR#3 as single #2?

Unlike TC/UC, there are no rules of who plays 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Somehow Zhang Jike always play very well in individual events but so-so in team event. Maybe the Chinese men's team is so strong that he may relax a little bit.

Videos of FULL Match in HD Quality

    .
So far for the FULL match videos of HD quality, I notice this guy as the main provider; but just few hours ago TableTennisTV also provides full match, HD ones. Few other outstanding video providers such as ttCountenance, SarmaikTT etc have the stripped down and or non-HD ones.

If you wanna avoid the search results being cluttered with the many short "Highlights", just filter it out by adding this parameter into search: "-Highlights".

You may download the YT videos for offline use using the free tool such JDownloader at www.jdownloader.org

These were the words of resignation from Timo Boll after losing the final against China for third time in a row. Before the tournament, the former European champion said that the current German team was the strongest ever, but it wasn't enough again to beat China led by an outstanding Ma Long.

Germany suffered its third defeat against China in a row at the World Team Championships. This rivalry began in Moscow 2010. But Germany and China had met in a world team final in the past. In Doha 2004 China of Ma Lin, Wang Liqin and Wag Hao beat Germany made up by Timo Boll, Christian Süss, Jorg Rosskop.

In Moscow 2010 Germany fell against China by 1:3. Timo Boll beat Ma Long by 3:2. Then Ma Lin leveled as he overcame Dimitrij Ovtcharov by 3:0. Zhang Jike defeated Christian Süss by 3:1. And Ma Lin secured victory after beating Boll by 3:1.

In Dortmund 2012 Germany faced China in the final at home soil. Although the Westfallenhallen Arena was sold-out, Germany couldn't do anything against the powerhouse China. Timo Boll suffered a 3:2 defeat against Zhang Jike in the opening match. Dimitrij Ovtcharov was swept by Ma Long by 0:3. And Patrick Baum lost to Wang Hao by 1:3.

Tokyo 2014 had to be third time lucky for Germany. With Dimitrij Ovtcharov in the 4th place and Timo Boll in the 9th place of the World Ranking List, Germany had the strongest team in its history, as Timo Boll said before the tournament. All this together gave hopes to German fans and some other who wanted to listen a new anthem in the award ceremony.

The final day came and Timo Boll and Ma Long met in the opening match. In Paris 2013 Boll lost to Ma Long by 2:4 in quarterfinals, so there were hopes that he could win this time. The former European champion has his chances, but Ma Long was better in crucial moments and won by 3:0.

In the second match Dimitrij Ovtcharov faced Zhang Jike. It was expected a great match, in fact it was, but with unexpected result. The current European champion beat the current world and olympic champion by 3:0. In the third match Patrick Franziska put a good fight, but Xu Xin prevailed by 3:0. After Ovtcharov's victory, the crown expected a close 4th match , but the Ma Long gave no chance to the German and swept with him by 3:0.

After the third defeat against China in a row, there was only resignation in the German team. Boll said to ITTF: "This is our strongest generation, but unfortunately for us this Chinese generation is also amazing. There’s no shame losing to such strong players".

Boll also commented to tischtennis.de: "We have a strong Generation in Germany, but during my career China has had extremely good players. That makes you wish to have been born 20 years earlier".

The German player also talked about Ma Long's performance: "You have to serve very well against him. Ma Long plays fantastically. Against the Japanese players, you can play rallies well, but he kills the ball directly. Dima had to deal with that too."

** Timo BOLL is an outstanding, very respectable player of this era! Also Dimitrij OVTCHAROV is admirable, and he seems to be a very nice guy having gentle personality.

Dimitrij Ovtcharov Signed with Jiangsu Team for Two Years of Super League

    .
Ovtcharov Signed With Jiangsu Team For Two Seasons Of Super League

    Patrick Tan May 12, 2014, 3:32 a.m.

Dimitrij Ovtcharov has been on a steady rise in the international table tennis scene. Currently, he has surpassed Timo Boll. With this, his status as a player also increases, earning him high treatments in the Super League. With his potentials, Jiangsu has signed him for two seasons in the Super League.

Modern Express. Dimitrij Ovtchaorv is now the hottest European player not only in the international scene but also in the Chinese Super League.

Dimitrij Ovtcharov is currently ranked 4th in the world and he is the highest ranking European player. He has defeated Zhang Jike, Xu Xin and Wang Hao before. For this upcoming 2014 Chinese Super League, Ovtcharov is contracted to play for Jiangsu.

"Ovtcharov is currently the most powerful player from Europe. He is younger than Timo Boll and he has the potential. Just recently, he has won over Zhang Jike. Therefore, we have signed him for two years." Jiangsu chairman Yang Fei said.

In the previous season, Jiangsu had a powerful lineup with Ma Lin, Chen Qi and Timo Boll. But they only finished in fifth place. At that time, Yang Fei has offered Timo Boll 100,000 yuan ($16,000) appearance fee per match in addition to winning bonuses. Timo Boll recorded 8 wins and 3 losses in that season.

For Ovtcharov's case, Yang Fei has offered the same amount in the hope that he would be able to help the team into the playoffs.

In addition to Ovtcharov, Jiangsu will also have Zhang Chao, Cui Qinglei, Lin Chen, and Cai Wei among others. "Zhang Chao and Cui Qinglei both have strengths." Yang Fei added.
