According to this article, http://www.thestar.com.my/Sport/Bad...ng-Wei-welcomes-shorter-matches-fewer-events/ BWF is planning to make changes to future Thomas and Uber Cups making it have less events, 1 singles, and 2 doubles instead of the current 3 singles and 2 doubles. Chong Wei favors this because he feels like this makes the competition more open, as opposed to China always winning due to their depth in the events. Also talked about was the scoring system change during the tournament that I've heard BWF has been twinkling with that was used in the IBL (Indian Badminton League). 1st two games are played to 21, 3rd game to 11.Thoughts?
I have an even better idea: one game of MS and one game of MD. If tied after two games, drawing lots to decide whether the 3rd game is MS, MD, or by paper/scissor/hammer.Better still, just cancel the whole thing!
This whole idea of changing the format and what LCW said are absolutely ridiculous. The target, one again, is China. First it was limiting the number of single players in the Olympic and now this. Maybe having too much depth and being too strong is a crime now. Everything is against you just because you are strong. It's irony since many nations complain that it's unfair because China is too strong and then they go on and make all these rules and polices that are unfair to China. It's not China fault that it has too much depth, it's the other nations' repsonsibility to improve themselves and challenge the best. If you don't improve yourself and just sit there complaining and expecting BWF to change rule to benefit yourself than you will never get better. It may sounds harsh but it's the truth. And if we change the format to one single and two doubles, how many country can get one point from men single from Malaysia? But well, I guest that it's just China fault for being too strong. Too bad for them, can't either be too weak or too strong.
That's ridiculous, and probably the worst thing they could do to Thomas and Uber cup.Imagine in a Thomas cup finale, the 1st and 2nd match all done in straight set (worst case scenario), the event probably over by an hour or so. If I were a live spectator, I'd ask for my money back.
Hi Fans: My opinion is to have only 1 single, 1 double and 1 mix doubles, 1 ladies singles , 1 ladies doubles.Uber cup and thomas cup combined into 1 cup.
I don't think it is a good idea to have fewer match ups. 5 ties in a match is very good. It allows for see saw ties. To increase team participation, the format can be changed to 3 doubles and 2 singles. That would allow one extra person to participate in the team event. It also allows teams to switch pairings around and give us novel combinations. That was always one of the attractions for me. IBL format scoring I am OK with. Probably the way to go is to have a test event, a junior event would be quite good. Definitely don't reduce to 3 ties. It would kill off the Thomas and Uber Cup. A note of history - there used to be a tournament called the Asia Cup - 2 men's singles and one men's doubles. It wasn't very interesting because one strong singles or one strong doubles effectively take the match.
that's insane, I don't belive that idea make badminton into interesting sport. but that idea make badminton more unattractive!
The problem with Sudirman and Thomas/Uber Cup is their duration. The Finals could be 6 hour long--which is insane for viewers and tv stations. Or they can be as short as 3 hours. It's a headache for everyone: BWF, host organizer, tv broadcasters, viewers, etc. I suggest the following. For Thomas Cup, for example, each tie should contain: MS1, MD1, MS2, and MD2. There should be 2 games per match, without a rubber game. So, a total of 8 games are played. Whichever team wins the most games wins the tie. If the number of games won are equal, then use score differences.
OMG,I think it's better only keep one single or one double for Thomas & Uber Cup in the future, that's enough.I would like to see how badminton is sentenced to death by BWF which is manipulated by MA
What an insane idea. As an Indonesian, I must concede that 2 doubles+1 single will advantage Indonesia. Historically-speaking, MD is INA's strongest compartment. That having been said, reducing to 2 doubles+1 single will reduce the tense of the game as the winner is def the country w/ 2 strong pairs. This contradicts the endeavor to promote badminton. Thus, the best solution is to (1)3 doubles + 2 singles, thus adding the number of players in the team; (2)2 doubles +2 singles; or (3)3 doubles+3 single. For (2) and (3), the winner's determined by the number of sets or points.
This will be the stupidest thing BWF has ever done if it does happen. Team championships are meant to be a test of the depth of a nation's programs. Otherwise it's called individual championships.
6 hours is not insane for viewers, only for TV. I don't think it should be cut down to 1MS and 2MD. Maybe what they need to make the teams more even is to cut the number of reserve. If teams can only bring 7 players, that means, if 1 injured, some have to play twice. Then we might see singles specialist playing doubles or doubles players playing singles. To cut down on the length, make it to 21, no deuce for the 1st 2 game. And for the tie breaker if 1-1, make the 3rd one more interesting with the winner just need 2 point more than the opponent like the deuce. But if 10-9, it's over.
I was the one and only one who voiced the idea to have 3 doubles and 2 singles since they wanted more players to participate during the forum...then few others proposed shorter version...we talked about changing scores, bonus at the end of year for top 10 players..
I think THE STAR quoted wrong..BWF proposed 2 Singles and 1 Double, not 1 Single nd 2 Doubles..as far as I remembered during the forum..they mentioned with that format, Spain Women could win Europe cup as they have 2 strong WS.
If they really wanted to have other countries to have a better chance of winning why don't they have 2 formats that play in alternative year. One for the 2 singles and 1 doubles, and the other back to good old days of best of nine. In cricket we have 5 days test and 1 day 50 overs as well. Football we have the alt. 5 a side, 7 a side. Why can't we have different formats for badminton?
Actually the new format with 2 singles and 1 double favors CHINA big time...so don't cry out loud...China can easily field CL,LD and 1 MD to win Thomas Cup..I am sure LYB will be very happy...
