I'm sure we all wish to have a strong and skillful backhand like Taufik's.

Among professional players, I've noticed that even some players don't have a good backhand clear resulting in some disadvantage. One example is Saina Nehwal.

By nature of their physicality, most female players, including pros, don't have backhands that can clear baseline to baseline.

Son Wan Ho's bh clears get attacked easily almost every time.

Ma Jin ... I wince when I see her stepping up to a backhand.
Luckily she doesn't have to play it very often :p

I find Son Wan Ho's backhand clear one of the most effortless looking with a good result. Check out his match against LCW in this years AE.

Yes, it does look effortless like the rest of his game. However, if you notice, he takes the shuttle quite low on his bh clears and drop.
On whatching the match, LCW was able to attack most of his bh clears and step in on his bh drops to put pressure on. I think SWH is not a player who struggles to generate power on his bh, but he seems to lack shot quality and deception on that wing.

After watching the match again, I have to say you're right. But the fact that SWH's backhand shots get attacked so easily by LCW is because he is so damn fast. He can just wait right at the net and get back in time for a possible clear and smash it (even if its right at the baseline).

For the deception, I don't know many players that put much deception on overhead backhand shots. Unless you consider being able to play every shot (clear, cross court clear, drops, etc.) as deception, which SWH can obviously do.

Many players can't do a full court backhand clear in a game situation and then there are indeed a few with just poor ones but imo you don't need a perfect one as long as you can keep the opponent guessing (variation or as rightly mentioned above, to have the ability to play them).

(I could swear there is an exact same topic like this around)

In single match, BH ability is a MUST as it's law of nature that BH side is always weaker than forehand side
Whereas in double, usually BH used in fast-flat drives. Only in grave danger situation, BH clear is used

Maybe if I were to pick some names :
Great BH : Kenichi Tago. Tai Tzuying. Lee Hyun Il
Poor BH : Kenneth Jonassen, Ardy Wiranata

Jung Jae Sung has a strong backhand, Cai Yun done a flick serve to him, the shuttle had gone far past is body but still cleared it to the back, like one of those amazing TH backhands!

Yes he has. I remember that one. Also on many occasion after tricked by flick server, then goes for the backhand clear, he just rotating smoothly counter clockwise on recovery. JJS and Setiawan's backhand in MD is special

I'm sure that his backhand even when you get it behind him and to his backhand isn't at all scary!

I wouldn't even mind being pegged in the face by his backhands 20 times...
