The schedule has been shifted from September last year to July, quiet weeks ahead of BWF major event end of next month in Copenhagen. Russsian Open has already started, lack of foreign participants as usual, home shuttlers will get tough challenge from Japanese players. Interesting to see Riichi Takeshita here as he performed extremely well last week in Taipei to eliminate WR #6 Son Wan Ho and pushed twice Olympic Champ Lin Dan to the limit in semifinal.
Really impressed with Riichi Takeshita. I had closely followed Japanese players during Thomas Cup. All were good, but really like the way Riichi played against Lin Dan few days back. He had everything to match Superdan. Yesterday saw Riichi Vs Lin Dan match and was totally blown away with his approach. Havent seen Lin Dan stretch that much against any opponent in recent times, LCW and CL included! Infact Riichi beat him at net so much so that Lin Dan avoided playing him at net.
Everyone is going gaga about Kento Momota but wouldn't be surprised if Riichi surpasses him!
It turned out the Russian Vladimir Ivanov emerged MS champion, not entirely unexpected for me except that his beating Richii Takeshita whose current form seems impressive is. Ivanov lived up to his top seed billing. Congrats to him.
Vladimir underestimates himself too much. He is a great player with phenomenal reach. Concentrates too much on doubles rather than on singles. He has defeated some top rated players on a regular basis.
