As well as accommodation and workshops, the Village will provide catering, transportation, medical and training facilities for those attending the Games. More than 500 volunteers will be on hand to provide room service, health care and first aid 24 hours a day to the athletes, who are aged between 15 and 18 and will compete across 28 sports. The facility will feature a "World Culture Village", which will showcase each of the 204 National Olympic Committees attending the Games, with interactive skills workshops available that can inspire the young athletes to become future ambassadors of Olympism. Elsewhere, the dining hall will offer four main cuisines of Asian, Mediterranean, European and Chinese food, along with Nanjing's famous local dishes. The Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games Village has been designed to be both environmentally-friendly and sustainable ©Nanjing 2014 There will also be a digital centre so residents can connect with their families and fans back home and play a part in the Youth Olympic Games selfie campaign, while a "Learn and Share" zone will allow athletes to chat face-to-face with Olympians to learn more about having a successful athletic career and avoiding dangers, such as doping and illegal gambling. The Village has been designed to be both environmentally-friendly and sustainable, with features such as an optical lighting system that uses no electricity, but instead collects sunlight and funnels it through pipes to light areas of the building to reduce carbon emissions. In addition, the water supply system combines cooling, heating and power to control temperature and contribute to the goal of energy conservation. Nanjing 2014 hopes the Village will be a place "where the athletes can relax, have fun and make friends when not engaged in competition". The Youth Olympic Games will take place from August 16 to 28. All singles players must enter in the Doubles event. There are 32 players in the Singles competitions and 32 pairs in the Mixed Doubles competition. Pairs in the Mixed Doubles event are composed of one woman and one man from different NOCs. The Badminton competition will be played in two stages: the group play stage and the knock-out stage. Group play stage The players/pairs will play in groups (eight groups of four players/pairs each), where all players/pairs in a given group play against each other. A final overall ranking order for each group will be calculated. Ranking will be established by the number of matches won. If two players/pairs have won the same number of matches, the winner of the match between them will be ranked higher. If three or more players/pairs have won the same number of matches, ranking will be established by the difference between total games won and total games lost, with greater difference ranked higher. If this still leaves two players/pairs equal, the winner of the match between them will be ranked higher. If three or more players/pairs have won the same number of matches and are equal in the difference between total games won and total games lost, ranking will be established by the difference between total points won and total points lost, with greater difference ranked higher. If two players/pairs remain tied, the winner of the match between them will be ranked higher. If three or more players/pairs remain tied, then ranking will be established by drawing lots. Knock-out stage For the Singles and Mixed Doubles competition, the top ranked player/pair from each group of the group play stage will qualify to the quarter-finals. This stage consists of head-to-head matches from which the winners advance to the next round. The only time a losing player or pair will participate in another match, is when losing semi-finalists meet in the bronze medal match. Differences between the BWF World Junior Championships and the Youth Olympic Games There are no differences in the general Competition Regulations and Laws of Badminton, however the format is different. The BWF World Junior Championships is a straight knockout competition whereas the Youth Olympic Games has a Round Robin format in pools leading to a knockout competition. The BWF World Junior Championships field contains more competitors due to the different quotas for member associations participation. Changes since the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games The Mixed Doubles event has been included in the Badminton programme for the Nanjing 2014Youth Olympic Games. 6. Badminton in China Badminton entered China after the First World War. The first national badminton competition was held in Tianjin in 1956, while the Chinese Badminton Association was founded in Wuhan on 11 September 1958. The sport subsequently evolved in China to reach world level in the 60s. Chinese players won men and women’s singles and doubles at the first World Games held in the United States in 1981. This marked the beginning of the rise of the Chinese team in world badminton. GeFei and Gu Jun from China won the women’s doubles at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games to capture China's first badminton medals at the Olympic Games. With the exception of the men’s doubles, the Chinese team captured all four other badminton gold medals at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. In women’s doubles, the Chinese team snatched all the medals, and for the first time three Chinese flags rose above the podium at an Olympic venue. The Chinese team won a total of 16 out of the 29 Olympic gold medals for badminton. The badminton team of Nanjing Sport Institute is an indispensible force in Chinese badminton and has played a critical role in the development of badminton in China. Four players from the team won five Olympic titles over the years, including GeFei, Gujun, Zhang Jun and Cai Yun. After Sun Zhi’an from Jiangsu became the first world champion from China, 18 others went on to win 52 world titles, including Yang Yang, Zhao Jianhua, Chen Jin, Xu Chen, Lu Lan, Wang Shixian, Cheng Shu and Tang Jinhua. Currently, five of the national team coaches come from Nanjing Sport Institute, among whom Zhang Jun, Liu Yong and Chen Jin are the chief coaches for men’s doubles, women’s doubles and women’s singles, respectively.

Chinese badminton superstar Lin Dan and 2008 Beijing Olympic Fencing Champion Zhong Man are among the torchbearers. Also on the list are famed Chinese director Chen Weiya and composer of the Nanjing 2014 anthem Bian Liunian. A total of 104 torchbearers will run the 100-leg torch relay along two routes. The first route of the relay was originally set to start yesterday. But it has been rescheduled to make way for the mourning for the victims of the earthquake that hit southwest China's Yunnan province. The second route of the torch relay will begin on Friday.
Thanks uncle loh for your scraps . Details and pictures are nice to have a quick knowledge about the the players.
I'm glad you also think it is useful to link name to face. I hope the non-traditional badminton country players will learn from their experience competing with the juniors of the powerhouses who must be of a higher standard and from whom the champions will emerge. But it is nice to see badminton spreading to such countries and hopefully more could be done for them to improve their standards. The recent Commonwealth Games have given us an idea of their standards.
Hey....I am glad to find this forum as I am having a query. I read that star sports will broadcast YOG Nanjing but which star sports... Ss1,2,3,4???please answer it ..thank you in advance.

The Opening Ceremony has begun and is being telecast live on Star Sports 2 in India. Gill Clark commentating on the Opening Ceremony surprisingly.
It was a fantastic show of music, song and dance, multi-coloured lights, social media and fireworks. The story of China's early explorers like Zhang He and his maritime fleet that visited as many as 20 countries and trade on the Silk Road were enacted interestingly. But it was China's future dream for the young that must be the strongest message. Badminton still has a place with Lin Dan featured as the most prominent torch bearer. And of course the unmistakable voice of GC. Maybe it was LYB who had a hand in her participation.

Looking at the individual profiles, almost every top youth player's professional objective is to become an Olympics Champion or a World Champion. These include He Bingjiao, Qin Jinjin, Lin Guipu, Shi Yuqi, Busanan and etc. However, this girl - Akane Yamaguchi is somehow different from the rest. Her professional objective is 'To be a player who entertains others and oneself.' LOL...

There is, however, no dampening to the spirits of the tens of thousands of who are filling the 61,500-seater stadium at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre, with the opening ceremony hosts keeping the crowd engaged. The possibility of rain was expected before the highly anticipated opening ceremony, and organizers have resorted to weather modification to prevent rain from dampening the opening of the Games, according to local newsletter YOG daily. Satellite monitoring and cloud seeding have been deployed, but efforts were to no avail in preventing Mother Nature taking its course. “There is the possibility the city could face frequent rainy days, electrical storms and occasional occurrences of haze and possibly typhoons,” said Zhang Zuqiang, deputy commander-in-chief of the Nanjing 2014 Meteorological Services Command Center.
