Hey there, Anybody playing or have played in Coal Harbour Community Center in Vancouver? How's the facility and competition level there?
Whoa... talk about die hard fans, you know? I didn't even know that there is a community center in Coal Harbour. Is there not enough places for you to play at, cappy? -Rick
Heh! Just part of my plan to familiarise myself with the baddy scene around town. It's within walking distance from Burrard Skytrain Station. I figured... what the heck, why not try it out?
Hey Dave, I thought you played there before. Heard you mentioned the place once. Was just about to ask you too.
Lemme know how it is after you check it out, eh? In particular, please tell me how the lighting is at the place. My eyes are so bad that in a lot of places, I can't make out where the shuttle is once my opponent hits it up high. -Rick
Sorry guys, but I beat ya to this one four years ago! Obviously, the facility is relatively new. It has four courts, wooden floor, sufficient space between and ample space at the ends of the courts. In terms of the lights, I do not remember it being poor nor exceptionally good, so I presume OK. The one thing that comes to mind is the ventilation. Because it is built into the hill, air circulation can be poor at times. The ceiling holds two humongous fans that looks like it can suck up shuttles if it were ever turned on. I know 4 players who used to go somewhat regularly, otherwise in terms of calibre, it is BYOC (bring your own competition). As of 2003Oct the schedule is Tue 6-8pm $3.75 Wed 8-10pm (max 24), but I remember they saying there was going to be a fair increase. If you guys are planning to go, give me a call! Cheers!
Hey BMS, I think I will drop by there tomorrow after Collingwood to check out the facility and get drop-in schedule confirmation. Will see what I can find out and get back to you guys later about the place. Thanks!
Since you're at that part of town (I know this could be a seperate thread), do you want to check out West Point Grey Community Centre (at Aberthau, near Jericho sailing club) 4397 West 2nd Ave. 604-257-8140 I used to play there long time ago because it had the aircraft hanger domed roof. oops, Sundays its closed!
Checked it out once ... it's also "bring-your-own-competition" there ... Almost all beginners. Uh, I didn't stay to play so didn't really check out court playability and lighting. It's REALLY hard to find, I had to ask the locals (at a Safeway) how to find the place. -dave
Hey Guys, Just checked it out today... as BMS has mentioned the facility is passable but not exceedingly good. Instead of two giant fans, I counted SIX giant fans that are grilled more for the purpose of keeping basketballs from knocking them off balance than keep birdies out. Drop-in is possible but days and time varies according to different periods of the season. Drop-in fee is $3.75 and limited to capacity of 45 people. There are two ways to play there... drop-in or register for a period of time. Obviously registered players take precedence. Have yet to check out Westend since BMS mentioned that it's closed on Sunday. Will check out Roundhouse Community Center next.
Roundhouse Community Centre... Two distinctive issues comes to mind. 1) the gym has positive air pressure, so sometimes the flight of the bird is affected 2) the 2 end courts has large windows, so depending on the weather & the time of the day, you can get reflection from the sun I'm not sure how much has the schedule/calbre has changed, but thanks Cappy75 for checking it out (I can update my database) Cheers!
Coal Harbour Spring Schedule '04 This is culled from the Recreation Guide Spring 2004 for West End Community. Website link: www.coalharbourcc.vancouver.bc.ca According to the guide, membership is needed for program registration and drop-ins. Additional one-day membership ($1) for casual drop-ins ($3.75).
West Point Grey Community Centre Played there eons ago, pretty decent..except for the floor bit. On a side note (not intent to hijack thread )..... Does any of you know where I can rent a couple of court for a Saturday evening, around 8'ish pm for a couple of hours.? Preferably somewhere in East Vancouver? Helping out a friend..Tried Collingwood, seem courts are booked solid for that particular time all the way till summer!! Cappy75/Wood22chuck/BSM...you guys seem to played everywhere and everyday ..thought you might have a place in mind.
Forgot about Killarney, but then again am not too crazy about the lightings. Britannia is a bit too far north. Renfrew?, Never played there before. Does Kensington has badminton court rental? Thanks for the suggestions Rick.
Tried: http://www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/cgi-win/RecGuide/RecGuide.exe but doesn't seem to offer up anything for Saturday evening. Break-My-String is "connected" somewhat ... Maybe he can offer suggestions -dave
Sorry WWCbro, just read this post now, but Sat evening bookings are tough. The only way you can get a last minute courts is by finding last minute cancellations.
