A customer's strings just broke on a mis-hit near top of the frame. Strings 2-3,4-5 broke at the top on outside of the frame: The last time he broke the strings and it was similar, only strings 4-5 broke on the outside. I use the same string and do my rackets 3lbs tighter and have had no similar issues. We play the same amount so I don't think it's me, but I'd like to get other's opinion since this seems to be more than coincidence!
Are we sure it went on the outside? Could it have hit 3/4 at the same time and broke both at once? The broken ends would get sucked into the frame and be indistinguishable from a break on the outside.
I replaced some of the grommets round the top. The ones I have were too long so I trimmed them with some of these http://xuron.com/index.php/main/industrial_products/11/10 could they have caused the grommets to be too sharp and cut/nick the string?
I do not think it is you. Really, there is no case to answer if the strings break on a mishit. What strings are being used? People can mishit consistently! I went through a similar situation many years ago and put it down to my problem. Funnily enough, when I started training more and striking the shuttle better, the strings rarely break on the frame, even with a mishit. This across different stringers but using the same racquets. I must say some of my grommets were pretty grotty and needed replacing.
i don't really think it is legitimate to blame the stringer if the player mis-hit and broke the string. it just wasn't designed to withstand the load of mis-hit and i have multiple customer who keep on mis-hit consistently on the same point on the racket frame
The flange of the grommet is far more likely to cause breakage than a cut edge. If you can remember, how long were the broken string "tails"? If one was significantly shorter than the other, that implies a mishit.
Thin string and mishit. Nothing to do with the stringer. But if he likes the string, you got a lot of work coming your way from this particularly customer in the future.
I used to have a racket that never had the inset for the string on the outside of the frame. This resulted in the string breaking like this several times, quickly due to it being heavily worn from scooping the shuttle off the ground before someone spotted the problem. Could this be it?
I thought about this as well. The location is a bit too close to 12 o clock for shuttle scooping. Even so I checked the strings on the other side and they didn't look frayed at all. The racket does have the inset and when looking at the profile I didn't see the strings pop out.
