.. This Womens Doubles pair has just won Gold at the 2014 Asian Games. Surely they deserve their own thread here. Greysia Polii Born: August 11, 1987 Nitya Krishinda Maheswari Born; December 16, 1988 This pair came together around the time of the Sudirman Cup 2013. Since then, their notable achievements have been: Thailand Open 2013 - Winner Singapore Open 2013 - Semis French Open 2013 - Semis Swiss Open 2014 - Runner-up Chinese Taipei Open 2014 - Winner Asian Games 2014 - Gold Their h2h against some of the best teams are (not including Asian Games results): 2-2 against WXL/YY 0-2 against Maeda/Kakiiwa 0-5 against BYX/TJH 4-0 against CP/KRJ
I think what's interesting from this pair is they have high defensive stats and rarely makes mistakes, something that differs from your typical Indonesian player, who are mostly offensive and erratic, giving the enemy free points. But what's different is now they have raised their attacking game, with Polii becoming more active to attack and they also raised their placing game. I think this will be a new style for the Indonesians, where defensive and tactical placement is more important then the old brute "smash till it go in" style.
What's really interesting is that Greysia has been on the circuit for a number of years without making much of a breakthrough. Hadn't seen her play for a long time and she looks a lot slimmer now.
Yes, I do agree that Greysia Polii has indeed slimmed down a lot. Maybe because she's occasionally playing XD too this year? So, she has to train more?

Indonesia's female shuttlers win Gold at Asian Games, after 36 years http://news.asiaone.com/news/sports/indonesias-female-shuttlers-win-gold-asian-games-after-36-years At last: Greysia Polii (left) and Nitya Krishinda Maheswari (right) hug their coach after winning in their showdown match for the badminton women’s doubles gold medal — Indonesia’s first at the 17th Asian Games — in Incheon, South Korea, on Saturday. INCHEON, South Korea - Greysia Polii and Nitya Krishinda Maheswari ended Indonesia's gold medal drought on the eighth day of the Asian Games, becoming the third national women's doubles badminton pair to win at the quadrennial event. The last time Indonesia won the women's doubles gold was in 1978, when Verawati Fajrin and Imelda Wigoena triumphed at the Bangkok Games. The first pair to win was Minarni and Retno Kustijah at the 1962 Jakarta Games. Greysia and Nitya gave a commanding performance, defeating Misaki Matsumoto and Ayaki Takahashi of Japan 21-15 and 21-9 in 46 minutes at the Gyeyang Gymnasium. The Red-and-White delegation has further shots at badminton gold, with two mixed doubles pairs and the men's doubles advancing to the next stage, all at the expense of Korean opponents. Praveen Jordan and Debby Susanto overcame second-game jitters to brush aside Ko Sung-hyun and Kim Ha-na 21-9, 9-21 and 21-15, while Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir also needed three games to dispatch Shin Baek-cheol and Chang Ye-na 19-21, 21-16 and 21-9. Hendra Setiawan and Mohammad Ahsan came back from a game down in their match beating Kim Gijung and Kim Sarang 19-21, 21-16, and 21-18. The most important showdown of the day for the Indonesian camp met expectations, as Greysia and Nitya played spiritedly to hold off the Japanese inside a gymnasium that that had already been deserted by home-team spectators. After winning, the two players celebrated and rushed to embrace their coach, so overwhelmed by ecstasy they could not hold back their tears. "I can say nothing about our feelings at the moment. We are so happy. This is for our families, our coach and the Indonesian people," Greysia said. Hendra and Ahsan will face Lee Yong-dae and Yoo Yeon-seaong in the final on Sunday, while the two Indonesian mixed-double pairs will tackle Chinese opponents for a place in Monday's final.
Very well rounded pair in attack and defence. Very interesting matches to watch as their placement shots are excellent. Not just endless boring clear and smash rallies like CHN and JPN pairs.
Rexy has certainly makes some BIG changes to INA's badminton after his appointment a couple of years ago. Kudos to him. Maybe sparring with the men's team bears the fruit though. Anyway, Greysia and Nitya is surely a pair to watch in the future! The Chinese team would surely analyse their game over and over again to identify what actually went wrong.
Being TPE GP Gold winner when they beat formidable Wang/Yu in final certainly boosted Greys/Nitya confidence to do best at Asian Games and all their hardworkings are paid off to bag gold in big event! Waiting their next performances
Congrats to Greysia and Nitya! Yes what a wonderful pair that Eng Hian has brought to life! Not that Greysia Polii is not a lively lady. She has been in the circuit for quite a while and her new partnership with Nitya must be a reprieve for her dedication to the game. Her smile is most infectious! Perhaps Rio is waiting for her and Nitya to capture the Olympic Gold? Barring any unforeseen circumstances or injuries.
What a change of circumstances. Eng Hian coached Singapore's Yao Lei and Sari and they won the Singapore Open 2010? But Yao Lei, at 24, has lost her passion for the game and has retired from the Singapore squad recently. Whereas Greysia, at 27, is still fighting for glory!
Greysia and Nitya had partnered in 2009 with limited success, only winning silver at the SEA Games back then, and runner-up at the Singapore Open SS as well. With Meiliana Jauhari, Greysia had a decent (but bridesmaid-esque) 2010-11 as runners-up in the Taipei, Macau and Indonesia GPG events. They were one of four teams to be disqualified in London at the OG-2012 Nitya hails from a family of achievers in various athletic/sporting disciplines, including a cousin who was a 2-times OG silver medallist in weight-lifting and a father who was a former national football player. Nitya had a successful partnership with Anneke Feinya Agustin in 2011, winning the Vietnam Open GP and the SEA Games gold. The pair had a very ordinary 2012, never really getting to Saturdays much less Sundays. In May 2013, she was paired up with Greysia once more at the Sudirman Cup, and they have been together since.
They skip Denmark and French SSP events.... they are resting? for next SSP? They should keep playing to raise their ranking so they can play in Dubai IMHO.
Impressive pictures! The 3rd picture from the bottom shows those familiar faces: Puttita Supajirakul, Zhong Qianxin and Greysia Polii. Is it right? The injured Bella looks quite lovely here. I wish her full recovery soon.
