Information from World Badminton - http://www.worldbadminton.net/Portal/intbadfed/HoF.htm#tang:

Miss Chen Yu Niang (China)
Introduced into the Hall of Fame in 2002
Born Indonesia 1947

Indonesian by birth though when she left her native country she had not yet reached international class. She was then known as Miss Tan Giok Nio.
Miss Chen became Chinese National Coach after retirement from competitive play and until 1994 trained many top Chinese players such as Guan Weizhen, Tang Jiuhong and Huang Hua. She now lives in Hong Kong.

[IMG]Mr Tang Xianhu (China)
Introduced into the Hall of Fame in 2002
Born China 1942

In 1974 China's number two player; originally known as Thing Hian Houw when he was the leading Indonesian junior in the late 1950's. He came from Jakarta and represented Indonesia in the Malayan Open Championships before migrating to China.
After retirement from competitive play he was a Chinese National Coach until 1985 when he returned to Indonesia as their National Team Coach training Allan Budi Kusuma, Heryanto Arbi etc. In 1997 he returned to China and once again became Chinese National Team Coach training Sun Jun, Xia Xuanze, Ji Xinpeng and Chen Hong etc. In 2002 he is still National Coach.

The above three named players were unable to participate in official international Badminton tournaments as at that time China was not a member of the International Badminton Federation. However, in all exhibition matches when well into their thirties, they were still capable of beating the very best around the world.
They played Indonesia in 1963/4/5; Denmark 1965; Canada 1972; Denmark and England in 1973; England 1974 winning all overall matches.
They first participated for China in an official event, the Asian Games in Tehran in 1974, when the Council of the International Badminton Federation gave a special dispensation to its member-organizations to compete with them. In the mens' team event, China beat Indonesia 3 -2 and the Chinese ladies beat Indonesia by the same margin in the ladies' team event.
Hou Jiachang won the individual mens' singles and Miss Chen Yu Niang the ladies' singles.

Never knew Tang had an Indonesian name called "Thing"

or Teng or Ting.

with a surname like that it indicates that Tang is a

"Fuzhou" person, one branch of people of Fujian with a distnct dialect that sounds like Japanese.

Many of his countrymen in Msia in state of Sarawak.

Kwun and Cheung used to be able to stump most readers in the past, but with the new influx of knowledgeable (read: fanatical) new members, the mystery is solved within the same day :D

Wow, the legends behind the legends. I wonder if all their experience would be passed over to the current coaches.

coach

Kwun , I realize how lucky I am after reading this discussion about him. My Indonesian and Chinese friends alkways used to say that he was world champion once. Though I believed them I did not understand his significance till I found this discussion.

Am not sure if he would like to travel to BF (San Jose?).

we are a small club and we play mostly for fun. He is here because his wife works here.

We are playing another school in a small team (friendly) tournament this weekend, and he has agreed to play depending on his fitness. (it's another issue that we may get our b*** kicked).
