The above three named players were unable to participate in official international Badminton tournaments as at that time China was not a member of the International Badminton Federation. However, in all exhibition matches when well into their thirties, they were still capable of beating the very best around the world. They played Indonesia in 1963/4/5; Denmark 1965; Canada 1972; Denmark and England in 1973; England 1974 winning all overall matches. They first participated for China in an official event, the Asian Games in Tehran in 1974, when the Council of the International Badminton Federation gave a special dispensation to its member-organizations to compete with them. In the mens' team event, China beat Indonesia 3 -2 and the Chinese ladies beat Indonesia by the same margin in the ladies' team event. Hou Jiachang won the individual mens' singles and Miss Chen Yu Niang the ladies' singles.
- Never knew Tang had an Indonesian name called "Thing" or Teng or Ting. with a surname like that it indicates that Tang is a "Fuzhou" person, one branch of people of Fujian with a distnct dialect that sounds like Japanese. Many of his countrymen in Msia in state of Sarawak.
Kwun and Cheung used to be able to stump most readers in the past, but with the new influx of knowledgeable (read: fanatical) new members, the mystery is solved within the same day -dave
- Alright, guess who that is trying to imitate Rudy Hartono doing his famous drop-shots, Its definitely not Fu Man Chu or Ching Chong.
Wow, the legends behind the legends. I wonder if all their experience would be passed over to the current coaches.
- this white haired guy is a veteran, hes one of Kwun's crafty old folks, believe me, he doesnt have to watch opponents in order to outsmart them.
Hahaha, please change the file name of the pictures next time. The file name actually tell us who the person is
- Thats the Cantonese version as IN Hk. in his native Fuzhou it will be Teng Sth. In Mandarin Tang. Confusing?
Coach Hou Jiachang hi all Mr.Hou Jiachang is the coach of our club. he still plays very well. i was surprised to find this discussion when i searched for information about him using Google.
arnott, you gotta tell us more about the legend! you must realize how lucky you are having him as the coach as he has cultured many top class players and world champions! do you think he will be interested in coming to BF for a visit?
coach Kwun , I realize how lucky I am after reading this discussion about him. My Indonesian and Chinese friends alkways used to say that he was world champion once. Though I believed them I did not understand his significance till I found this discussion. Am not sure if he would like to travel to BF (San Jose?). we are a small club and we play mostly for fun. He is here because his wife works here. We are playing another school in a small team (friendly) tournament this weekend, and he has agreed to play depending on his fitness. (it's another issue that we may get our b*** kicked).
