Great job. it seems to take so much time to repair a shuttlecock... Maybe it's worth the value.

    Practice makes perfect.
It takes about one minute. (A feather)

I was going to make a video but thanks for doing this, saves me time. We have two members in my club that repair shuttles this way, they save the club over 20 dozens plus each year (about £340 ~ $550). The shuttles are fine to use in club nights.

I hadn't seen the home made wind tunnel though and love that, will make one myself, thanks for sharing.

    Kindest regards,

    -Ajay-

What shuttlecocks are these? I tried it with some destroyed Victor shuttles, but I couldn't get the feather out of the cork (with cutting).

Also I've seen people say it can only be done with 1 feather; why only 1? Is it not possible to refurbish multiple feathers?

Now did you know you can replace the heads/skirts for plastic shuttles as well?
You just have to pull apart without damaging the cork or the skirt...

Proposed replacement of 1 to 3 feathers.
Rotating rod was cut hair feathers.
Feathers will be more likely to be pulled out.
Not every type of badminton can do.

Okay from experience, this works well with Yonex AS50. AS40, AS30, Yehlex Premiership, Victor Gold Champion and RSL Tourney No1s. Note all of these are full cork based shuttles. Also the reason why it only works well with one bad feather to repair is to do with balance and weight. If many shuttles are damaged, it is hard to get the balance correct so that the shuttle doesn't wobble in the air once repaired. Nothing is worse than a wobbly shuttle. Putting the right amount of glue, etc is paramount to a good shuttle repair hence if only one feather is broken, it can be easily repaired without compromising the flight integrity.

ccbdmt asked me to share some insights from his past experience of shuttlecock reincarnation. Many of the concepts are similar to what Ajay shared above.

When starting to practice this technique, it's easier to succeed by
    1. using used shuttlecocks from "same tube" or "similar grade from same batch"
    2. using named brands shuttlecocks only
    3. using high quality grade shuttlecocks only

The reasons behind this is that these shuttlecocks has better feather/cork quality and durability. Also, these shuttlecocks have better consistency. You'll get better return for the time and effort you invest in.

    Other advices from past experiences:
    1. You can use a scale to weight shuttlecocks after repair and categorize them in different groups. Try to use shuttlecocks from same group when playing to get a more consistent feeling.
    2. For wind tunnel, it's mainly used when you try to repair shuttlecocks for someone else. In this case, you can't take the shuttlecock to court and try it out since you wanna keep the birdie as new as possible.
    3. If it's for yourself, you don't really need a wind tunnel. You can just take repaired birdies to court and try each one out. If it wobbles, then adjust feather a little bit and try again. If it doesn't work, take it home and try to see if you can repair it better.

As you can see from above, one of the key point is to "categorize". Categorize the material you use and categorize the final product. Basically, you're trying to do something similar to shuttlecock factory. :)

Ahh I see the use of the wind tunnel now, thanks for explaining. We just test out and use the repaired shuttles during club nights. Some can be a bit wobbly and tend to break quicker but as I said before, it saves us alot of money during the course of the season so it is worthwhile to do, especially if you are a relatively big club that goes through many dozens of shuttles each season.

    Kindest regards,

    -Ajay-

    期盼再生球的概念與方法,能推廣到世界各地,
    並且被廣泛使用,藉以增加羽毛球運動的人口,
    讓羽毛球運動,能有現今網球運動的規模與資源。

We hope the concepts and methods of shuttlecock reincarnation can be spread and widely used globally to bring more people to enjoy badminton, and make badminton as popular as tennis around the world today.
