KUALA LUMPUR: It has been two joyous days for shuttler Jan O Jorgensen in Malaysia.
The 27-year-old Danish star rose to a career-high No. 2 in the world rankings – shoving Lee Chong Wei to No. 3.
The latest rankings were released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Thursday.
Malaysia’s Chong Wei has not played in any tournaments since being slapped with a suspension after failing a doping test at the World Championships in Copenhagen in August last year.
Chong Wei, who had held the No. 1 position for almost six years, can expect to slip further down the rankings.
On Wednesday, the Dane was in high spirits too, celebrating his first win with Petaling BC in the Kopiko Purple League at the Sports Arena Sentosa in Jalan Kelang Lama.
The reigning Indonesian Open champion Jorgensen defeated Ai Wei Jian 11-5, 11-3, 11-6 to give Petaling BC a boost but it was not enough to propel the team in the standings.
Petaling BC eventually lost 8-13 to Kepong BC and are in sixth spot in the 12-team standings.
The only other win for Petaling BC against Kepong BC came through former Asian junior champion Soo Teck Zhi, who did well to upset his senior Nur Azriyn Ayub 11-6, 10-11, 11-10, 11-5.
Kepong BC underlined their depth in the team by winning through Low Juan Shen-Woon Mun Chun, Liang Xiao Yu, Chin Chuan Jue-Soo Kar Seong and Hendra Gunawan-Vita Marissa to be placed fourth in the standings.
