How do you know when you need more or less tension?

    Hey everyone,

I just got my racket with BG80s and 24 lbs tension. I noticed I have a bit more control, I still need to play more to get used to the sweet spot and power. But immediately I haven't noticied a significant effect. I presume more playing will help me realise if they are worth it but what am I looking out for to tell me I need to increase or decrease the lbs?

Trial and error. i.e. it takes a few restrings.

I play with people who are on a similar standard and they have 28 lbs. They get real nice clean crispy pow when they smash, I don't really get this. I know sound funadmentals and technique on how to hit a smash, maybe I need to practice really getting the sweet spot on my Voltric 7 but I feel like I could go higher with the lbs.

Too low: too bouncy / overhitting. Especially at the net for me.

Too high: can't find sweetspot. Can't generate enough power.

But yeah, lot of trial and error, and specific tension for each string for me.

Just because they are of a similar standard doesn't mean you use the same tension. It's like when I play against international players - why do they always seem to get a nice crisp contact when I use a similar tension to them.

Isnt there a pro that uses "only" 23lb? Victor sponsored I think. So its all about matching your technique. Rule of thumb is that higher skill can handle and appreciate higher tension. Ego does seem to add a couple of pounds though ;)

    You're welcome.

Now I'm beginning to question if I even got the right racket, as you probably know the Voltric is head heavy, I like this but sometimes a little laggy to get it back in replace to recover. Ahhh so confusing.

Too low = excessive string movement and lower shot accuracy.

Too high = backhand clears fall shot of the back line.

Mine differs on each racquet too. 30lb on my MXJJS was right but too high for me on my TK9000.

Tai Tzu Ying, if memory serves.

But have a listen to some of the Japanese girls' rackets - they sound like they've come straight from Argos!

Your tension will be determined by your swing speed, consistency in hitting the sweetspot, and how much you value accuracy vs power. And keep in mind these factors will also change when under the pressures of an intense game.
