AFTER 10 years, the BA of Malaysia (BAM) is likely to terminate its partnership with sport company Yonex.

The Japanese brand, which has been BAM's main sponsor, will probably be replaced by Taiwan's Victor, which will give the national team a new look.

    BAM's deputy president Datuk
Norza Zakaria, however, declined to comment further on the matter, saying the process is still at the evaluation stage.
"We are still evaluating, and all will be announced in due time. We will only do it in the best interest of the national team," said Norza at theKLBA Stadium in Cheras during the Kuala Lumpur Open final yesterday.

"BAM has a working committee to assess the sponsorship deal for the national team. Datuk
William Toh Ah Wah, who is a council member, will propose to the exco.
"This matter will be decided soon, and we should allow our president (Tengku Mahaleel Tengku Ariff) to make the announcement." It is, however, learnt that Yonex will continue to be the sponsor for national No 1 Lee Chong Wei, even if the national team decide to switch brands.

    Meanwhile, BAM's
Goh Soon Huat rose to the occasion to bag his first title of year, following his 21-12, 21-19 win over professional shuttler
Tan Chun Seang in the men's singles final.

Goh Jin Wei, 15, proved that she is a future star by becoming the youngest woman to win the singles in the local circuits top division.

Jin Wei fought hard before defeating her senior teammate, Lim Yin Fun 21-13, 22-24, 21-19.

News in Bahasa Malaysia from Metro Harian:

Bagaimanapun, Timbalan Presiden BAM Datuk Seri Mohamad Norza Zakaria berkata, beliau masih belum mampu memberi sebarang komen lanjut mengenai perkara itu.

No surprise. Yonex will naturally push for lower sponsorship since there are no high profile players in BAM and low publicity.

If another company can provide more sponsorship funds, then BAM should go for it.

Wow, would be interesting to see what the racket changes would be for each and every player. Except for LCW of course, as he has an individual contract with Yonex.

This is good for the sport I guess - that we're moving away from a single manufacture dominance. The only thing that it doesn't help is with retail prices!

If only the extra competition meant more competitive prices! Shame this theory doesn't apply to badminton racquets, but instead the manufacturers seem to pass on the extra cost to us consumers!

In Yonex, red color is mainly used by Indonesia and Denmark players, as for Team Malaysia their major color are black+yellow and blue+white.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) & Victor deal worth RM60 million (equivalent to US$16.5 million).

News from The Star newspaper below:

KUALA LUMPUR: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) enjoyed a huge boost when they signed up a RM60 million deal with their new equipment sponsor Victor.

On Tuesday, BAM's president Tan Sri Tengku Mahaleel Tengku Ariff inked the deal with Victor representatives - Chen Den-Li (chairman Victor International headquarters, Taiwan) at Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara.

Also present were Datuk Alex Wong (managing director Victor Malaysia) and Jeff Chen (managing director Victor China), BAM council members, players and coaches.

The BAM's contract with Victor runs for six years.

The entrance of Victor, ended Malaysia's 15-year partnership with Sunrise Yonex.

There was one exception though, with only world No. 3 Lee Chong Wei maintaining his individual contract with Yonex.

Great... where do you think that 16.5 million USD is gonna come from? The consumers... us Victor racket and equipment buyers of course... ;)

Time to buy some more Victor rackets soon before the prices go up...

That's a lot of money, even when spread over 6 years.

Approx 2.5 million usd per year. At a guess, 30 players, coaches, physios (and council and the other senior guys who sit at the front row of the Thomas Cup matches).

If it includes the juniors at BJSS, I start to think it's worth it for Victor.

    BAM got a good deal.

Yeah, definitely a good money for BAM and the development of badminton in Malaysia provided BAM management did not misuse the money.
