Could this work for a lot of badminton clubs?

20 dollar entry fee for each person = 80$ for a full court.

    8 team tournament.

    20 dollars X 8 teams = 640

640 - 500 prize = 140 profit margin is not bad to occupy 4 courts.

I'm just trying to figure out how many games need to be played in a round robin format.

No. In a round robin league format so everyone plays each other there would be 28 matches. If it's best of three then that's up to 56 games. I can see you easily needing 12 tubes of shuttles for that. Decent feathers therefore would cost about $360.

If you had 4 courts it would take about 6 to 7 hrs to play all the matches. Cost of court hire: $10hr x 28 is $280. That's your $640 gone. Plus there is likely to be many more small costs such as how you will track score. You may think it wouldn't have to be taken too seriously but as there is prize money it would require good organization.

Could OP not do two round-robins of 4 teams each?

That is 3 matches per team (12 matches).
    ____

After that you have options, depending on your time.

The simplest might be a 4-team elimination bracket between top two teams in each round-robin draw.
    (A1vsB2 & B1vsA2).
And you could use your other two courts to give the other teams in the RR's a chance to play for tournament ranking 5th-9th. (A3vsB4 & B3vsA4).

That is 6 more matches for a grand total of 18 matches.
Minimum matches for a team would be 4. Max # matches would be 6.

This is where you want help from someone local with experience with tournament set-up.
Can you afford enough time at your rental place to allow up to 30 minutes per match, plus rest periods? (With 4 courts and only 8 teams, one can't expect teams to play continuously.)

    Good luck.

    i should've been more specific.

Yes that was my initial thought. Round robin for the group stage only, like World Cup.

3 games per team MAX. If you win the first 2 you automatically move on.

Can someone figure out the MAX and MIN number of games that can be played here?

Did the calculations. If you breeze through the competition you're playing 4 games. 6 is the max if you struggle.
