Damn, Hanyuduck2005! Sorry to hear about your injury:(. What's the professional opinion (ie. doctor's)? I guess it's gonna be a long time before you pickup the racquet again:(.

tearing of ligaments is permanent and very serious..
yea reconstructive surgery can be done though

I've had both of my ankles twisted a few times, but the worst one happened 3 years ago when I was playing volleyball. I never had any operation, and I could play badminton with no problem. However, once a while I could still feel the pain after one year (not while I'm playing, but usually after playing), and it will never be as good as before injury.

You should get an opinion from someone who took the operation and see what they say. But, it all depends on how bad the injury. I could play the next day after I twisted my ankle if it's not too bad.

Only you can decide on an operation with your orthopaedic specialist.

Just bear in mind that an operation is not a "cure all and end all". There is also a risk you have absolutely no improvement at all!

    Ankle ligament torn

Sorry to hear about your injury. My scan shows right ankle ligament neatly torn and left either partially or fully torn. First thought about surgery.

After 4 months, my ortho has asked me to wear Ossur Exoform ankle supports and says I CAN PLAY AGAIN. This is heavy duty supports almost looks likes shoes and is quite hot and tight inside shoes. Trying to play first time tomorrow, wish me luch

    man, stay off your ankle!
i know it's tempting, but i've had a pretty big sprain in my ankle over the summer
the doctor said i tore 3 ligaments and slightly worse and i would've needed surgery
i'm recovered now, but the ankle is never the same
from experience, don't play at all while you're still recovering
    just keep doing stretches
and see a physiotherapist, there will be major scar tissue build up, and that's what i'm feeling right now in my ankle
strength, balance, flexibility and mobility is not what it used to be, and this is 6+ months after the injury

i had a grade 2 tearing in 3 of my ligaments in my left ankle last year around august. Was a very severe injury. With physio and rest i was back on court after around 4 or 5 months. after about 6months i felt close to full strength again.

For the first month i was on crutches. and for the first week i had my leg in a cast incase it was broken.

So i dont really think surgery would be necessary depending on how severe your tearing is. Unless your ligament has tottally snapped and coiled up somewhere inside your leg, you dont really need surgery.

But consult your surgeon and talk about what would be best for you and your interests.
