    when watching a professional playing, a lot of the player that did the serve gave code to his mate at the back court, sometimes 2,3,4 fingers. Wonder what they meant by that. Anyone care to explain? Thanks

    It tells the partner where they are going to serve. Every pair has its own signals.
    1 and 2 could mean low serve (center and wide) and 3 & 4 flick serve (straight and cross). Just a guess, though. :)

    Ma Jin is even more elaborate with double hand signal... first for where she'll serve to and second for which shot she'll cover...

    These are the hand codes that i used to my regular double partner (using my right hand):

    Index finger = low serve = 1
    Index and middle finger = flick serve = 2
    Thumb = Opponent forehand side
    Small finger = Opponent backhand side

    Examples :

    1. 1 + thumb = low serve to the opponent forehand side
    2. 2 + small finger = flick serve to the opponent backhand side

    That's nice! Haha it's something interesting to guess what they actually mean. Even the commentators of official competitions are doing that.

    pardon me as I'm a newbie. But what is the advantage telling your partner on where you are going to serve ? To setup the offensive?

    So you can be prepared. Server is can flick or low serve. Maybe he wants to flick. He tells you beforehand. So you can move faster to defend for incoming smash. Something like that. Main gist is for partner to move faster into position.

    So that you and especially your partner knows what shot return to expect, and hence where to move to immediately after serve.
