The semifinal day is arriving and many upsets by the underdog to defy pre tournament favourites fulfill their seeding position. Well, both CHN and DEN have sealed 1 final spot each through WD and MD respectively. It's healthy draw in singles category where there're four different nations are represented by 1 player each.

MS, Jorgensen-Lin D semi script has been denied as both of them failed to progress. Axelsen will up against Sugiarto, both players must capitalize this rare chance to reach finale in SS event as MS category is more and more competitive ahead. Homeground hero Srikanth has slight advantage to beat Xue Song, it will be tight match as they did in two previous meetings.

WS, Saina Nehwal is unstoppable to cruise into last round and she will get tough test tomorrow, either Intanon or Marin. Interesting h-2-h, Thai prodigy Intanon never losing to World Champion in three previous meeting and maybe the Spaniard would score her first ever winning over former World Champion today. Race of new world #1 is on, Nehwal or Marin?

MD, will it be European affair tomorrow? Nothing is impossible for Russian pair to defeat Chai/Hong who performed awkward yesterday particularly game 1 and end of game 2. The senior Danish combo still shows consistency during this tournament, it would be difficult for their younger teammates to beat them.

WD, Matsutomo/Takahashi v Pedersen/Juhl is noteworthy tie to watch, just wondering why the organizer doesn't arrange WD match in TV court. Hard to predict who will prevail this time, the top-seed Japanese pair seems out of their best form lately afer Dubai SS Finals victory last December.

XD, two INA representatives have heavyweight rival, Jordan/Susanto must apply better strategy than last meeting in MAS Masters final early this year when Danish duo wrapped up in straight games. Being semifinalist, it's best result for Subaktiar/Widjaja in SS level, they have good potential to be next INA leading XD.

I would have enjoyed a WD games, either of semis. Sometimes (more nowadays then before), WD find a balance between coherent exchanges and explosiveness, while MD is sometimes too fast, and XD too static.

    Well well well
    Now I am getting confused!!!
If SN wins the Finals she is for sure the new #1
If SN finishes runner up and RI wins the title SN will surely be the #1
    But,
What if SN finishes runner up and CM emerge as the champion.. Will CM be the new #1??
    Please somebody clarify

saina just needs to reach the final to become number 1 no matter what, even if both saina and marin reaches the final and saina is to lose to marin in that scenario as well saina will become the world number 1.

You should be asking when is the last time the WS WR#1 assumed the position because the World No.1 cum incumbent WR#1 was out of action for a long period of time due to injury?

When Chen Long became WR#1 and the Chinese news media reported it, he straightaway said he want earn the world no.1 spot and not be given it because LCW couldn't play for quite some time. This despite the fact that he deserves it by virtue of his creditable H2H with LCW which currently stands at 9-9 or 10-9 in CL's favour if you include the Asian Games.

I'd like to believe that not only does Chen Long have strength of character and a self-demanding spirit but he is also partly influenced by having the legendary Lin Dan as his teammate/idol and the highest standard set by Li Yongbo who famously said that any of his charges who wins a title without LCW playing in the tournament doesn't count for much to him.

Had to agree with Justin L in this. Of course every body knows that ranking of a player is very important. Some players have higher ranking because they played in many tournaments. Some players played lesser tournaments so the ranking is lower. Some players cannot play due to injuries so their ranking is lower. I know many players are injured because badminton is a high injury sports. Currently lots of China players are injured. Just to name a few Li xuerui, Lin Dan, Wang shixian, Wang yihan. Then there are also players who are still injured but choose to play despite injuries. Those players who are injured but still play in tournaments may not be able to play to their best on court due to injuries. Some examples, goh v shem both left and right knees are injured but he still play in tournaments with his partner tan wee kiong. Despite being injured, both of them reached the finals of the recent Swiss open 2015 before losing to China. Then goh Liu Ying is just back from knee surgery and her knee pain is not totally healed yet. Just her second tournament this year with Chan peng soon and they win the polish open 2015 gold medals. These are just examples. What I an trying to say is ranking is not important but performance at the court is more important.

Then, it would be huge shock for homefans, Cheung ;)
Both Yamaguchi and Okuhara are Japan leading MS now, but yeah who knows Hashimoto could steal the show like Shizuka Uchida did in 2013 Japan SS.

World ranking is just a guide , not necessarily a true reflection of the players relative strength, unless he or she is consistently at the top, even then there are exceptions (as in LCW's case). But world ranking is needed to organize world class open tournaments which would be difficult to do without it (eg who should qualify, who should be invited), other than for closed, invitational tournaments.

well put. And world ranking goes into historical records. It's also good for the profile of the player after they have finished their playing career.

Yes, well said and I agree with you. The example given for Lee Chong Wei is also very good and accurate. Lee Chong Wei is not allowed to play in tournaments since October, 2014 till now. Therefore his world ranking has plunge from no 1 to no 8 this week. Maybe his ranking may continue to plunge again as he is not allowed to play in tournaments.

Well said Justin. :) The world ranking should just serve as a guideline but it cannot be used to judge a player performance.

i don't remember either of saina or marin saying that they are really happy for the fact that li xuerui is out of the competition because of injury so they are getting a chance to become number one in the world, both marin and saina are very much capable of becoming world number one, doesn't matter li is playing or not, both of them are hard working players plus wan't to add that saina in one of her recent interview said that unfortunately li is out of the competition due to injury but she is a great player and once she will come back, she will come back stronger and well prepared so i really did not understand the logic of unnecessarily putting up the fact of li xuerui's absence is helping other players to reach the number one spot also in sports no single athlete want's to win some title due to others retirement or injury or vice versa and as far as saina is considered, she really loves the hard way out that is work hard, work on your frailties and achieve the ultimate goal.

Yesterday there is a match of women doubles from China vs China. LUO Ying / LUO Yu China win over China OU Dongni / Yu XIAOHAN 19-21 21-11 21-17 in the quarter finals.

Today there is another match of WD BAO Yixin / TANG Jinhua China vs China LUO Ying / LUO Yu. It is very unfortunate for all the China women doubles to be drawn together in the same half of the tournament thus preventing an exciting match of China women doubles vs another China women doubles in the finals.

To be honest it will be exciting to watch 2 China women doubles play in the finals because China have really good women doubles.
