KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Open badminton championships will go on as scheduled in Kuantan from June 29-July 4.

Yesterday, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) secretary P. Ganga Rao said that he had received favourable replies from several countries including China, Denmark and England for the championships.

Earlier, there were fears that the four-star tournament would not attract entries from the top-playing nations following the postponement of the Indonesian Open (June 22-27).

But some of the teams now plan to use the Malaysian Open as a “warm-up” tournament before the Athens Olympic Games from Aug 13-29. “After feedbacks from some of the countries, we are going ahead with our plans to host the Malaysian Open as scheduled. There are no major meets after the Thomas Cup Finals (May 7-16) and some of the Olympic-bound players may want to have some match practices here in Malaysia,” said Ganga.

I think BAM are de-centralizing the Malaysian Open in order to develop badminton all over the country. (that's what I read last year if I remember rightly, maybe someone can confirm)

In any case, I think this is cool for Malaysians who live far from Kuala Lumpur and don't get many occasions to see live badminton at this level...

I heard that it's mainly because of sponsorship problems. Usually the state that manages to get enough money would host it. Of cos it does promotion of the sport good too. ;)

Kuantan is a beautiful town. It is clean, open and the beach is nearby. I am tempted to revisit Kuantan again. If you have time, you could get to see the giant leatherback turtles up along the Trengganu coast, or you could go over to the nearby royal town of Pekan to play polo with the royal family of Pahang. Or you could play golf. And don't forget the famous Kuantan salted fish.
Strange as it might seem, my former hostel master was a gentleman by the name of Wong Bentong, who has a brother called Wong Kuantan. I wonder who came first.

Isnt the Malaysian Open going to be served as a warm-up for the Olympics, why are Indonesia splitting up their doubles ?

But most important of all, is Luluk and Alven going to compete in this tournament ? I really hope to catch them playing in this tournament
