    Hello,

I do not play Badminton with a club or anything, I was just playing with some friends in our garden. We played for a total of about 2 weeks (few games a day) last summer.

I was playing then started to get this pain in my lower back, felt like a sharp muscle pain, continued to play as the pain wasn't bad, after 5 mins I decided to sit down as the pain started to worsen. After about 10 minutes of sitting down I couldn't stand up straight nor walk, the pain was unbearable. If I remember correctly it was on the right side of my lower back, I couldn't put any weight on my right side as it would hurt too much.

I was bed ridden for about a week then it started to ease off. After 2 weeks I was back to normal (not playing Badminton). From then on something has never felt right with my back, always a bit uncomfortable.

Anyway, this summer my acute pain came back randomly, got out the car and felt a pain, after 10 mins I was in bed again, perhaps not as bad as the first time but still put me to bed. My girlfriend noticed that the muscles on the right side of my spine were locked up, the pain would ease up after a good massage.

After 3 days of this I went to the doctor who said it seems like muscle spasms, gave me some anti inflammatory tablets and the pain was gone 2 days after taking them.

Now my back always feels uncomfortable, when I sit down I have to have something supporting my back as I end up with a sharp pain in my lower back which usually goes after a minute or so of trying to stand up straight. It's usually worse in the mornings and eases off as I move around. Lying flat on my back helps a lot.

I'm looking for any type of advice, has anyone else suffered from this? The main thing I'm worried about is the constant uncomfort in my lower back.

I'm generally quite fit, I'm 23 years old. I'm a ski instructor in the winter and run a campsite in the summer so a lot of walking around. When I'm busy and haven't sat down in a while the uncomfort almost goes.

Does this sound a muscle problem? Could anyone recommend any excerise a if so...

    Thanks

You need to go to the doctor again and push to get referred to a specialist (chiropractor or spine health specialist), at your age you should not be suffering from this type of back pain. Back pain can be complex and you need to get a proper diagnosis on what's causing it.

I've not suffered from back pain long term but I know plenty that have, it definitely not something you want long term. Good luck.

    Kindest regards,

    Go see your doctor again.

Persistent discomfort in the back which might stop you from working. It could be muscle spasm. If the doctor sends you away again, you can ask what is the underlying cause of the muscle spasm if you get acute episodes randomly.

I'm not sure how it works in the UK, but you need to see a chiropractor to get an adjustment. Sounds like a misaligned facet joint which is simple to fix.

And yes, I've experienced this before. Felt like someone stabbed my back with a knitting needle!

Exactly what i had just 2 years ago (i also wrote the same post about low back pain, asking for advices).

But in your case, the pain slowly increases as the time passes by. Mine was like a sudden stab on my lower back, due to the pain and shock made me fainted for few minutes, and i had to be bed-ridden for couple weeks. The first 2 months were a great suffer as i had to walk with the help of stick, i couldnt sit properly as it hurt my back while sitting and standing (only laying down is the most comfy for me).

As of the moment i wrote this, the lower back pain is still believed to be there, i just needed to be extra careful when doing all sort of sports. Of course it wasnt as worse as the first time, but i just come to accept it and live with it. The doctor had me MRI and explained that it would never go away until death. Some year it wouldnt show up, and another year it would come to you for a short while. I was 28 years old by the time this lower back pain hit me. If i remember correctly, my doctor mentioned about nutritious, aging, sitting, standing, sleeping, and few aspects of daily life contributes to this so-called lower back pain. Medicine would help ease the pain, but only by surgery would the disease can be treated. Massage, accupunture, traditional treatments, and many more wouldnt help much (trust me, i've tried them all the first half year). Surgery would cost lots of money, and there's always a risk of you becoming a sleeping-veggie shall the doctor makes any mistake on your backbone.

My advices is, accept the disease as part of your life, relax your mind of all worry of never having to walk properly again, and 6 months from today you'll barely notice it was ever there. Of course, the pain might come back once in a while but only for few unfomfortable weeks, then gone away again. Dont need to take anti-inflamatory or pain killer meds since they all bring side effect to your body. Forget about massaging as it only good for pas long as you being massaged. And dont even think of lifting heavy stuff or jumping for a while.

Go and see a good physiotherapist (is that the correct word in english?) and let him show you some exercises for your core strength.

This will not let the pain disappear completely, but a strong core will def help you to being less injury-prone.
I'm struggling with lower back pain for 10 years or so. Since I'm doing a lot of stability/strength exercise, things are much better and acute phases of massive pain are very rare...

Hi there, do find a doctor fast regarding your problem, as if u were to drag on like me. You will gonna regret. I didnt get my lower back injury via badminton, but I got it via a fall.

Symptoms of what you describe is exactly what I had felt, and i am not here to scare you, but really its a warning.

IF it is slip disc aka my injury, please kindly seek medic attention, I had to remove my disc in my spine as it so called slip out of position and crushed my nerves, so I wasn't walk straight and had pains in the lower back. Recovery period after the OP was so painful i felt like its worst than people stabbing me.(Just a description of pain)

IF it isn't slip disc, it could be muscle being over used. Your muscles over used itself during your game or any form of movement be it small or big, and could results in tightness of the muscles. Once the muscles contract your other connecting movements on your lower back would pressure the muscles, causing discomfort. this can be remedy via some form of stretches via googling.

But end of the day, don't even think of saving money, just go seek for medical attention.

    Yours Sincerely
    Guy that gotten back injury

I've been suffering this since I was 23 as well.
It comes as go. Perhaps once or twice a year.
I can't stand straight or bend over without excruciating pain.
Also I found this thread because I have recently hurt myself again last sunday playing only one game.
Plenty of rest on a bed is the fastest way to heal it and you will be back playing badminton in 2-4 weeks.
So far physio and chiros for me have been useless. I've yet to take a MRI so I can't advise if my issue is exactly the same.
Avoiding injury so far is plenty of back stretches which I forgot to do last Sunday.
But hey if you find some cure - be sure to let me know.

Do lots of core excercises to strengthen and protect the back.

Do get your MRI scan fast, or at least have some scans to be certain. I drag on for really really long. Close to 2 years of drugging myself with painkillers everyday like candies to my mouth as I didn't know I was having slip disc and waiting for scans took months to years. So hope you didn't suffer any slip disc related injuries as it is so painful you don't wanna go there. Do take care of yourself.
And nerves are being pressured by the disc leading to unable to stand for long or straight or body posture totally go slanted on one side, just to adapt to the pain. So do get the scans fast.
