How much space should be behind the Base line? In the courts of the sports hall of the university where im studying at its only about 80cm-1m. Is that too short?
Yes, and that's assuming no one will walk behind there within that 2 ft space while there's a game rally going.
For international tournaments, the BWF specifications (§3.1) mandate 2 metres (6½ feet) around the lines of the court. The rules themselves (which unlike the BWF regulations apply to all Badminton games) do not mention any minimum. However, national rule translations often do. For example, the German rules [§1.10] require: between two sidelines 0,30 m between sideline and wall 0,30 m between two baselines 1,30 m between baseline and sideline 1,30 m between baseline and wall 0,80 m So for regional play or below, 80cm should be sufficient. One of the halls I play in (university gym hall, Düsseldorf) has even less space (about 70cm). It may take a couple of minutes to get used to, but does not feel like a huge problem.
Over here in Singapore the worst I've seen is abt 60cm from the wall! They even have a folder basketball hoop popping out so up there is like 30cm from the line.
I've played in some dire locations, church halls etc. Where the wall is about 50cm from the outer lines, its so annoying!! I wish there was a ban on such venues as they are dangerous and injuries waiting to happen. As I said, there is a ban of such venues for competitive play in Germany and on international levels. No referee I know of would label a court with 50cm behind the baseline as anything but a practice court. I am quite surprised though that the Badminton England regulations do not specify a minimum size around the court though. So why don't you to ask them to add a rule? My (albeit severely limited) experience is that regulation changes are surprisingly simple to achieve if most players agree with you.
There probably is for county and national level competitions, but nothing for the league level players. Thankfully most a moving out of the poor venues and using newer refurbished sports halls which are on the whole better. There are still some clubs stuck in their old ways and resistant to change. On Friday I play in a gym hall which is just 10 years old and has only 25-30cm behind the baseline to a wall on each side. I don't need to tell that alot racket died there and that you can't play anything like a clear or smash properly when your opponent do a deep lift which lands on the baseline. The rent of the hall costs 23.000 Euro/per month. IMO the architect must be tared and feathered every day. The reason for this construction is more parking spaces infront of the hall and now the best: Beside the hall is a big park house of the unniversity. facepalm¹°°°
Hahaha.........welcome to the real world of multi purpose hall. Understand what you're going through. On the bright side it does train you on using more of your very compact shot from baseline.
this should be taken seriously, the clearance in every court...or else an accident is much likely might happen...
