Do you tell others you play or discuss badminton with your non-badminton friends?

I usually don't especially with my non-badminton friends or non-Asian friends because I do kind of get embarrassed because many times people who don't understand badminton make fun of it and think it is a backyard or easy sport. I know I shouldn't, but still! Or they think in their head "you say you play badminton? that's not a sport!" So when I meet people at school or outside, I rarely mention badminton.

    How about you guys?

I don't see a point in keeping it secret. If people don't see it as a sport (which never happened to me) invite them to a training session. That should prove them wrong.
But there really is no point discussing badminton with someone who doesn't know anything about it.

Why not? They only embarrass themselves if they don't see it as a competitive sport...

The whole 'back garden not a real sport' thing seems to only happen in America. I've yet to experience it here in England.

True, the non-badminton people I've spoken to usually speak about badminton in good light. They don't really know anything about the professional side, but they see it as sport the same as any other.

And to answer OP's question. I very rarely talk about badminton, unless asked. Luckily I have a good football knowledge so I can get by in sport conversations. :)

I tell others I play badminton, but discussion of badminton is strictly with badminton friends or those who have expressed an interest in it.

I find that when you want to discuss specific topics, if you are talking to the non-interested, they either give you the I-don't-know-what-is-going-on face or simply is disinterested that they may just fall asleep as if they are attending some boring lectures.

Why is it only in America that badminton is seen as a backyard sport?

    It's definitely very strange.

I don't see why anyone should be embarrassed talking about it. It is an Olympic Sport and there are plenty of videos on YouTube to show people to have a quick look.

I'm quite open about it with my friends. Everyone knows that I'm very passionate about badminton, even if some laugh or mock it. I've brought a few of them with me to try out the sport so I've changed some of their opinions.

I take the route of educating people who honestly don't know better because that's what american culture has taught them; you can't blame them for not knowing!

mistyped was saying Range Rovers, price about $250K, if you're fan of cars you could spot LCW's Lamborghinis that's about $500K and he has like 3-4 of those, well bottom like couldn't laugh about their success in badminton, backyard sport they say? ^^

I don't think Peter Gade is as wealthy as LCW, LD and Taufik, is he?

PG was placed on number 3 or 4 alternating with Saina Nehwal for net worth according to few websites I checked, TH is placed at 5 so I guess all four legends are wealthy. But you're right that I couldn't find him rolling on expensive cars like LCW, LD or TH on Youtube so that might make people think so.

Doesn't Danish badminton have a connection to Audi? That could explain the lack of a supercar. Haha
