    Hello,

For a site I'm building I'm trying to come up with ways to roughly categorize the level of a player. What I have now for now is:

    • Beginner
    • Regional
    • National
    • Pro

Does this makes sense? Do you have any idea on how to improve it?

    Thanks for your help!

No problem with the terms but standard of play vary from country to country. So when you write 'international', is a regional player in Australia supposed to be comparable to one in Canada, China or India?

    Good point.

We'll have a list of video replays that ask for external advice, and depending on your own level, you will want to look at reviews that are in an appropriate skill range. That's what the categories are for.

So we don't need to have an exact match, but it would be good to have something not too far away.

Then you will need another category or two between beginner and regional. This range carries the biggest number of players who ask the most questions.

    You're right. How about:

    • Beginner
    • Intermediate
    • Departmental
    • Regional
    • National
    • Pro

    Departmental..?

In the UK it might be something like:

    Beginner
    Intermediate
    Advanced (club)
    County
    National
    International

    [*]Departmental -> Advanced

Have a look at this rating system developed in Singapore. It might help give you some ideas for sub-classification of that difficult area.

Thanks for the link. The idea is interesting. I am myself not a big fan of questionnaire-based evaluation for sports (mental toughness and tenacity are very important and difficult to measure), but I can see where this is going.

I like the "club" idea, it's easy to see what it means.

Regional in France is probably equivalent to County in the UK, and a department is a smaller division (one region is between 2-5 departments). Didn't know if that was understandable abroad, I have my answer :)

    How about something like:
    • Beginner
    • Casual
    • Club
    • Regional
    • National
    • Pro

Yes. Any method of classification will have its good and bad points. I think club you can divide it into Club Social and Club Competitive.

Any more categories after that is too many.

Ah that's a good point. I was thinking of dividing Club into "Club" and "County", but yours may be easier to understand. "County" is not a term used in France; is it understandable in other non-English speaking countries?
