Hi all, i've been thinking about this subject for a while now as some of these factors affect my playing considerably. I have searched throughout the forum but haven't found any similar threads. Anyway here goes : If you had to weight the different factors contributing to your badminton performances across fitness/speed, skill, racket, string/string tension, how would you spread them? This will obviously be dependant on your style of play i.e Defensive/Offensive type of play as somebody smashing the heck out of the shuttle will need to be fitter than someone standing there blocking it back over the net. I am assuming conditions and shuttles are optimal. As a predominately defensive player I would rate my factor spread as : Fitness 30% Skill 35% Racket 23% String/Tension 12% What do you all think?
interesting question... i will put racket and string/tension at the same 12% level. maybe add a bit for the shoes, as i think that is more important than racket/strings. i noticed you take out the court condition, but for someone who frequent a few gyms, the court condition is very important. as footwork/movement in the most fundamental in badminton (ie. if you can't get there, you cannot hit it). i find that anything that affects my footwork can potentially screw up my game.
I tried to assume conditions are perfect for playing. So court/light is good and shuttle is perfect speed.
Sometimes, I will have a bad day...where I know I won't do well if I tried. I'm not sure how to classify this factor though..but I know what contributes to it: - tiredness/sleepiness(feel like legs can't move, and I feel slightly dizzy from too much work during the day) - difficulty breathing(I think it's just temporary; I caught a cold lately) I'll still go play..but at those times..I'll just try to have a little fun; anyone trying to challenge me would be disappointed. So then...I would say the factors for me are spread as follows: 50% health - how well rested; if I feel well..I move about the court faster, and my shots have better consistency 20% shoes/socks - having good grip on the floor is very important..if I feel I don't have traction, I won't dare to move as quickly to avoid injury. Sometimes I would feel my feet slipping inside my shoes..that is bad; i end up tieing shoe laces again..but then i tie it too tight that my feet aches 15% racket - having a reasonably good racket helps 5% string tension - my racket doesn't have my ideal tension..but it's not too terrible; I like tension to be around 22..but even 18 lbs is acceptable..I'm not bothering for restringining 10% luck - the unexplainable factor...sometimes I can do some trivial shots for easy points. Also..my partner might try to do a smash..it becomes a drop because of hitting the racket frame. Then there are the lucky shots where I hit the net and it just rolls over.
For me, I'll also include mentality/confidenticiality (does this word even exist?) into factor coz my confident shattered quite easily especially when my partner keeps instructing me to do this and that during the game. oh well, here how i'll distribute my factor: Fitness 25% Skill 25% Racket 10% String/Tension 10% Mentality 30% vc
Assuming I'm uninjured and not sick: 1. The phase of the moon. 2. How cute any chicks without eye's view are. 3. Whether Uranus is blocking the light from my lucky star. Okay enough joking, in order: 1. Have I had more than 6 hours of actual sleep in each of the 2 nights previous (remarkably uncommon for me)? If so I can play really well. (70%) 2. Shoes/surface, if I can't get to the shuttle, no matter how good my racquet/racquetwork is, I can't hit it (20%) 3. Racquet/strings/tension. (10%)
health / fitness / confidence / mental toughness: 30% skill: 30% equipment (racket/shoes/etc): 20% partner: 5% dumb luck: 5% i packaged confidence and mental toughness with health and fitness coz its difficult to be confident and mentally tough if you dont feel well going into a game... simple symtoms like sniffles or muscle soreness can take a lot out of my game and greatly affect the way i can play through it. of course blood alcohol level is also a critical issue... but that doesnt often enough to warrant a spot in the rankings
Fitness 40% (I'm not really a good player, but really fast) Technique (footwork etc) 20% Skill (if that means natural talent) then 5% Racket 10% String/Tension 10% shoes 15% But that is what you can control every time Mental condition can not always be controlled as the ceilling's height etc...
Factors affecting me: 20% each. 1. Court lighting system. 2. The hall's ventilation, if air conditioned, how great! 3. nice benches to take a rest after a set of game. 4. Icy cold water coolers conveniently located. 5. Nearby toilets and posh shower rooms. So usually, I don't get to play well because none satisfied me. Just my excuses.
for me cosh my eyesight sux and i dun wear specs venue is importance for me. such as court color . green is good for me.. brown is alirght not light colors that are the same as e background. for me as i am a skinny player i depend much on my speed & skill instead of power. therefore, skill - 30% speed - 30% power - 20% tension, confidence. - 18 % luck - 2%
i think the factors that affect my game most importantly is my speed(footwork), then i guess skill and power, i think i'm not yet solid in these factors and the side of the court and last i guess are the ppl around me! especially when u see someone that u really hate while u are playing!!!!
Its weird, but this really helps my game. I come to practice about a half an hour before the rest of my team, and in the empty gym set up all the courts myself. I find it very relaxing. Other than that, just mental toughness, not letting bad shots or bad partners get to you.
im surprised no one said this yet but for me in a tournament environment, it can go either way... nerves 50% skill 50%
