    normally there are three speeds

    green-slow
    blue-medium
    red-fast

they are for different atmospheric conditions, humidity, temperature etc

do a "search" for more info

the shuttles should have a little sticker around the flat end of the cork head, which is one of the above three colours, so you do not need to measure it yourself.

That color codes are likely for Yonex Nylon Shuttles.
For the feather ones, the speed is labeled on the tube caps.
For here in the US, the number seen most is 3, 50, or 77. They all mean the medium speed....

i don't understand the problem here. maybe i can use an analogy:

    John is 180cm tall.
    Mark is 180cm tall.

    who's is taller? :)

or maybe i am totally missing what you are trying to say. perhaps elaborate in more details (and proper english) so we can understand what is in question?

that rating system is old and not anymore for feather shuttles. nowadays the shuttle speed is marked on the tube with a little sticker instead of color coded.

ok i just confused myself as well..i see your point..and im going to try to phrase it as best as poss.,.if i can..
alrite..so is it possible to compare a goose feather 77 to a duck 77? do the speeds of the shuttles depend on their weight alone..or are there other factors involved..(the shape, feather, material?')

Many other factors might be involved:

    1. Storage condition

    2. Steam process before playing

    3. Gym environment

    4. Shuttle condition

    5. How hard u hit... :D

    ........

i think i understand your question.

the 77 (or whatever) rating is the speed rating. regardless of material. when each shuttle are made, they are flight tested for speed, and sorted into various speed and boxed and labeled.

to rephrased, if a shuttle is marked 77, it doesn't matter what material they are made from or what shape, weight, etc. they all have the speed of 77.

just like John and Mark, one may have a 30" waist and weight 150lbs, the other one may have a 40" waist and weight 250lbs. they all stand on the ruler, and comes out to be 180cm tall. :)

    LOL, I love analogy.
    My 2 cents.
A 4 cylinder 2500lb toyota prius is coasting downhill doing 90 mph on its last gear while on the opposite end a 4500 lb, 600 hp ferrari is travelling uphill doing 90 mph on 3rd gear. Which car is running faster

in reality i think the prius would be running faster due to windspeed and the downhill edge it has :p

Amazing, given two analogies listed above, some still think 100 lb rocks weigh more than 100 lb of feather shuttles

If Lin Dan jumps 3 feet into the air, super-windmill roundhouse a smash with a gut wrenching scream, veins popping out of his nick, stiff racket bending like a bamboo, and unleashes a three hundred km/h smash ....

And current Punch Gunalan playing with his buddies, grunts and hits a straightforward smash at three hundred km/h, still courtbound, no jumpsmash, but drives a Prius ...

    which smash travels faster?
