when doing backhand serve, i usually just hold the bird like i am w/ forehand serve, maybe that's because i started playing badminton using forehand serve for the first 5 or so yrs... now i think about it, most ppl hold the bird w/ just the tip of their mid and index fingers on the very top of the bird. is there a "correct" way to hold the bird? or is it just personal preference?
Try this thread http://www.badmintonforum.com/vb/showthread.php?t=5558&page=1&pp=25&highlight=hold+shuttle and this one http://www.badmintonforum.com/vb/showthread.php?t=1106&highlight=hold+shuttle
naw, i'm way over the hill to be a circuit player. beside, one can't make a living playing badminton in canada.
ohhhh why?~! and how should i hold it instead? if I hold it a bit above the cork i end up slicing it...
then your shuttle to stringbed contact (technique) might not be correct. best is to view some videos from MS games of pros. If pic worth thousand words, then videos worth millions
As cooler points out (and maybe Cheung as well but I didn't click the links) serving two different ways mean they are two DIFFERENT serves. In the backhand the shuttle is held using the hanging method, the thumb and forefinger each pinch a feather so it hangs downwards allowing the stringbed of the racket to impact the cork base, there is not much room for error in this serve since the shuttle is so close to the racket to start off with, the only problem is people hitting their fingers. In a forehand serve the shuttle is still held in the thumb and forefinger but the pinch is on the top portion of the cork base where it meets the feathers around the circumference of the cork and the shuttle is held out in front of you, so that you hit it using a much longer swing motion so there is more room for error(s) creeping in. This holding motion also allows your body to be in the correct position, when you let go of your shuttle the holding arm should naturally just drift outwards to mirror the arm positioning of the racket arm to give you your ready position. I've never seen anyone holding a shuttle using the backhand technique for a forehand service
True, but you can live to play badminton. CF, try copying different people on the way they hold the shuttle. See what works best for you. It takes time as well. You may have to practice a serve over a thousand times to start to get it right for you.
Then you suck at serving... And yes I'm like most people that holds the bird with the thumb and forefinger pinching on the top of the bird. However, part of my thumb actually touches the racquet.
