Eighteen shuttlers to spar with Olympic-bound squad

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 18 shuttlers will spar with the Olympic-bound squad during their centralised training camp, which begins in Putrajaya on Sunday.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) administration manager, Haji Ahmad Idris, said the nine players for the Athens Games would check into the Palm Garden Hotel tomorrow.

“They will be assisted by 18 shuttlers, who will stay at the Residence Hotel until the Olympic-bound players leave for Athens on Aug 8,” said Idris.

“The shuttlers will train at a four-court hall in Uniten (Universiti Tenaga Nasional) and also at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara, depending on the requirements of the coaches.”

The nine players for the Olympics are singles players Wong Choong Hann, Lee Chong Wei and Mohd Roslin Hashim and the doubles pairs of Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah, Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choon Eng and Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty.

The singles sparring partners are Yeoh Kay Bin, Lee Tsuen Seng, Kuan Beng Hong, K. Yogendran, Mohd Hazwan Jamaluddin and Mohd Hafiz Hashim.

Help for the men's doubles pairs will come from Koo Kien Keat-Gan Teik Chai, Tan Bin Shen-Ong Soon Hock and Lin Woon Fui-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari.

Three boys – Lok Chong Chong, Jack Koh, Razif Rahman – and three girls – Mooi Hing Yau, Ooi Sock Ai and Fong Chew Yen – will spar with Eei Hui-Pei Tty.

The camp will also be attended by eight other athletes from five other sports – swimming, diving, athletics, archery and shooting.

Malaysia will be represented by a total of 26 athletes in Athens.
