Absence of coach won’t bother us, says Eei Hui

KUALA LUMPUR: The women’s doubles pair of Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty will not let the absence of their coach Cheah Soon Kit affect their morale ahead of the Athens Olympics badminton competition next month.

The duo checked into the centralised camp at Putrajaya on Sunday without Soon Kit. They will be under the charge of national doubles chief coach Yap Kim Hock in Athens. The other coach of the Malaysia team for the Games is Misbun Sidek, who will take charge of the men’s singles players.

The 22-year-old Eei Hui said that it would be better if Soon Kit was with them in Athens.

“He is our coach and he knows our game style. He also knows us better. But the decision is not in our hands and we have to abide by the choice made by the BAM (Badminton Association of Malaysia),†she said.

“We have to get adjusted quickly and depend on Kim Hock for advise and instructions in Athens. Our aim in the Olympics is to try to reach the quarter-finals. That will be an achievement.â€

Since coming under the charge of Soon Kit last year, Eei Hui-Pei Tty have given good performances against pairs ranked among the top 10 in the world, especially over the last two months. They are now ranked 20th in the world.

In the Uber Cup Finals in Jakarta in May, they defeated world number eight Chikako Nakayama-Keiko Yoshitomi of Japan and went down fighting to Denmark’s world number seven Ann Lou Jorgensen-Rikke Olsen.

At the Asian Championships in April, they beat world No 9 Shizuka Yamamoto-Seiko Yamada of Japan and world No 10 Chien Yu-chin-Cheng Wen-hsing of Taiwan to qualify for the semi-finals. They took South Korean giant-killers Lee Hyo-jung-Lee Kyung-won to the distance before bowing out.
