what do u think is the key reason in the past that almost no #1 seeds won the gold? (except for Ge and Gu, but they're just crazy players, so let's just exclude them ) i think it's because olympics come once in 4 years, and most players will have very few chances of playing in olympics, which puts more pressure than any other tourneys, which comes once in 1-2 years (except for Asian games).
Gong Zhichao was #1 seed and she won the gold in Sydney. Tony Gunawan and Candra Wijaya were also #1 seed in Men's Doubles when they won the Gold in Sydney.
Also, didn't Pak Joo Bong and Kim Moon So win as top seeds in Barcelona (92) So did Susi Susanti Not forgetting Ricky and Rexy in 96 There could be more but I can't remember
alright alright, there's more and u'r right, sorry for that stupidity... but park/ kim, candra/gunawan, are both crazy players too, so that's not fair// but,, still there were lots of upsets like kim/ra losing in sydney, zhao jian hua losing in barcelona(though not sure he was top seed), or ji xing peng or ardi winning the gold... why is that?
Brave is right, but it is the same for all major tournaments (Grand Prix, WC, ...). Player's quality and quantity is another factor.
Well actually, the No. 1 seeds usually do not win in Olympics because they are not crazy enough. Besides being the No. 1 seeds, they need to be crazy players as well. But seriously, there is only one No. 1 seed. From their point of view, it is them against the rest of the world. The No. 1 seed also has to start from 0-0. The No. 1 seed may have performed better than the others in the past, but that does not mean they will be the best on the day.
