I am an intermediate player and I am getting a Yonex Armortec 500 racquet. I am able to choose any type of string I want for the racquet, so I was wondering what kind of string should I choose and what tensions it should be set at. I am also a fairly aggressive player who plays with ocassional drops. I am buying the racquet for $175 Canadian..(this includes tax and any type of string I want). Is this price fairly good? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
BG-80 @ 20/22 lbs BG-65Ti @ 21/23 lbs BG-65 @ 22/24 lbs Those 3 strings are GREAT for aggressive attacking players!!!
if u have a strong arm, then imo, u shouldn't really go for those repulsive strings such as bg 80, 85, or 66. i used to use bg 65 all the time, and i was quite happy with the strings: powerful smashes, good high clears, etc. however, a few months back, i decided to try teh bg 85 for a month. i was very impressed with the power i was able to generate. excellent smashes, effortless clears, (and a nice sound too). However, rite after that, when i changed back to bg 65, i couldn't smash and clear and smash as powerful as b4. i realized if u get one of those repulsive strings, it's difficult to change back to those strings that have less power. i soon realized this was bcuz u put less power in ur shots with those bg 66 85 and 80 than bg 65, and u depend too much on ur strings to produce the power of ur shots. so, if u use bg 66 for about a few months, u'll have to build up ur strength again to get used to the bg 65, 65ti, 70 pro, etc. i personally think depending on ur arm energy is more important depending on ur strings... the only exception (which i believe) of when u should use the thin strings are when... 1.) if u have a weak smash and need more power. 2.) if u do other sports or lift weights so that u can maintain ur arm strength. it seems like ur an aggresive player, and i'll assume u have a powerful smash, so my advice is stick with the thicker strings. also, if ur strong, the thinner strings will only last u about 2-4 weeks. then again, this is my suggestion, but EVEN if u use the thinner strings,DO NOT put them at 18 lbs or less... (my experience with these strings talks here )
lol I kept on forgetting that not everyone owns a string machine I personally use BG66 string, about 21x23 at most of my rackets.
Put it this way, at least he'll change the strings earlier if he doesn't like them I think new_guy has a valid point as well.
what do you guys think of the price as well? $175 Canadian (including tax and stringing with whatever string i want)...is it good? or kinda expensive?
After conversion, $175CAD is about $134 USD. $134 USD for a AT-500 with stringing, I would say, this is at the expensive side to me (since I souce my rackets from Asia). However, at Canada, it might be a good price; Different country has different pricing according to Yonex. So, I think you should be OK.
$175CAD+string is a good price in Canada but that's about the price of a genuine AT800 from ebay so... I would think twice before buying
However, lately we have seen lots of Fake AT800s on eBay, so be careful with eBay and never think a $50 USD for a brand new AT800 is a good steal. Turtle is correct, for a genuine AT800 on eBay, it would be around that price.
so i'm thinking that $175 is a good price and i'm not getting ripped? (cause this is the first time i'm buying a good racquet)
I got mine for 175 at Yo's, it's not a rip. I got mine strung with BG65 Ti and it works great. However, just to warn you ahead of time, after about a month with AT500, you will want something more from the racquet, more agression or more defensiveness, AT500 is too well-rounded.
