I have read several topics on grips. Many suggestions were to put another grip on top to make it thicker (since I had problems holding the raquet when smashing). I was wondering how thick a typrical raquet handle should be. My hand from the crease in my wrist to the tip of my middle finger is 7 inches.

i have to agree with cooler but i mean i have tried a 3U (which i have now) and a 4U i persoally dont lie eather but thats when i just striped the grip and put some hockey tape on the shaft qand built it up a bit before putting a new grip over it. so my grip size is kinda between a 3U and 4U.

really depends on how big your hand is =P , haha , and how you like to hold it. Grip it till u find it comfortable. 3u is the average.. if u need it bigger, u can always double grip or triple grip, or.. some people i know quadriple grips =/ i dont know why...

er sry about that i have to change that my racquet grip size is a 2U not a 3U but the rest is still the same except for this part. "so my grip size is between a 2U and a 4U but its probally closer to a 3U either small or larger than it by a bit." there had to fix it so sry about the mistake.

    Hold on a sec!

This discussion probably belongs in the Equipment forum...

Anyway, let me set the record straight... the U designation as used by Yonex and others is for racket weight NOT for grip size. I'm not sure if the balance of the racket also figures into the U # or not.

It's the G# that is important for grip size. For an explanation of the numbers, check the Equipment FAQ.

I would reccoment using a grip that is small enough so that you can hold the handle in your fingers rather than down in the palm of your hand. This will allow you to employ finger power in your strokes and also will enable you to roll the racket handle in your fingers for various strokes. You will probably want to get the largest grip that you can handle & still meet those criteria.

You might prefer to get a slightly smaller grip than that, even, so that you can add one layer of an overgrip of your choice.

Just make sure you don't get too LARGE a grip. Small grips can always be made larger, but the converse is false.

This is a difficult skill that is absolutely essential for good badminton. Difficult to appreciate at first as well and large grip sizes make it more difficult to perform.

I'd say if you can do this, you will be much better than most 'average' players.

i created like a new technique of wrapping grips, when i realized my hand kept slipping when i smash, and i can't really use my full power. i made the bottom much thincker than the rest of the grip, but didn't add anything but pure grip (such as yonex) it looks like this/...

haha, lol. ididn't want to put so much irrelevant dots and stuff on it, but it will collapse if i post it on the thread...

btw, i saw a few ppl do that too, like kdm (who overdoes it, kinda like me), taufik hidayat (normal) and some alot of pros do it slightly... but i developed it b4 i saw these guys' grips, so i didn't copy it!:D

this way, i won't have to change not-so-durable grips like YY super grap every week, and my smash delivers all my swing power. i persoanlly like it alot... i recommend to ppl who has slippery hands and don't like to waste grips...

Can you guys elaborate a little on this? the drawing seems to look like a normal grip to me  I'd like to know more, since whenever i do some shots requiring some "power", my hand(well my thumb actually) also seems to slip out. I've tried some different sorts of grips, I always have that problem.

fold the beginning of the overgrap in half (hot dog style). wrap the bottom of the racket a few times with the folded grap, and as u overlap it for about 3-4 times on the bottom, start to unfold the fold of the grap, and u have a bigger bottom

this is pretty popular, but i thought the bottom wasn't big enough for me. that's why I normally make the bottom bigger
i can do this by folding the overgrap in half (hotdog style), and then fold the overgrap AGAIN in hotdog form. i usually wrap the bottom 4-6 times, and then loosen the folds while u still wrap the bottom of the racket. it works wonderfully for me, but there are somethings to watch.

1.)make sure the grip is thin. yonex super grap is thin enough, but anything thicker than that won't do.

2.) make sure when u wrap the bottom with the folds, u TIGHTLY wrap the overgrap, so that it will stay without loosening overtime.

i hope u can visualize this... i personally would have a tough time...:)
