Seo was the surprise Finalist at the WJC 2002 losing to China's then 16 y.o. Jiangjianmei - who became No.1 world junior for 2 years but lost in 2004 final to Taiwan's what's her name (she was an unknown and is struggling in the senior ranks since the WJC). Seo was going over-age for the 2004 WJC so she went in the senior circuit after WJC and moved up the ranking. Very small but like GongZC, makes up with determination, speed and incredible retrival. Remember how GongZVC emerged from nowhere after she had been written off as too small next to giants like Ye, Zhang and Zhou? Well Seo will soon be in top 10 although I think Jun, 22 is a wee bit better. The two with their strong doubles pairs - led by the Lees, will be a serious threat to China in the UC. But like Gong, she'll have to stop early as the height and weight disadvantage will wear her out and the moment she loses a bit of speed, she'll be beaten. Too early for a prognosis. Y
You are probably talking about Jiang Yanjiao (2002 WJC) and Cheng Shaoh Chieh (2004 WJC). Cheng Shaoh Chieh was clearly not unknown at that time as she was quarter-finalist in the Athens Olympics!!! She is currently ranked 20th in the world, three places below Seo Yoon Hee... Anyway, I agree Korea (and Japan!?) will probably be the greatest threat to China in the Uber Cup in coming years...
She turned 23 last Friday. She still plays for the Samsung Electromechanics pro team but was only on the national team until April 27th of this year. Since then, the only international tournament she's played is the Thailand Open, where she beat two Indians before losing in the qualifying rounds to Thai junior Porntip Buranaprasertsuk 21:15, 25:27, 16:21. She was in Thailand under the auspices of her pro team. Among the 21 Korean players there were all 16 active Samsung players. She is still playing. She helped her team to 3 top-two finishes this year and placed 3rd in the only domestic individual event this year.
She scored a big win over Wang Chen in Seoul in January but then had an embarassing loss to unknown Wakita Yu in the first round in Osaka and then she lost in 3 respectable games to Yip Pui Yin in the R16 of the BAC. Her ranking had slipped to 83rd by the time she left the national team.
