I went there Thursday night...it was so dead that there were two courts open. We need to get some good people playing.

$1 for students (probably why no one showing up)
    $3 for non-students (still a good deal)

    SJSU: weekend badminton

Even tho' BANC is not currently involved, several courts are availble for open gym play on both SAT & SUN afternoons. Not sure of the hours but my guess is that courts would be available around 2 or 2:30pm til 6:30pm or so. When the main gym is taken over for some other function, training & open gym is often held in the older YUH gym (closer to 4th strret).

BANC had been charging $2 per session but I don't know if there will be anyone collecting $$$ for the rest of the year for weekend play.

Is this still going on with the whole BANC on the weekends? I just came back from the Irvington 7am open badminton.

Suspension of BANC Training Program & Open Gyms

Dear BANC Students, Parents, and Participants,

Due to circumstance beyond our control, Badminton Association of Northern California (BANC) has no choice but the difficult and unwanted decision to as of August 31st suspend our Training Program and Open Gyms which have been held over the last two years at <local education institution>. We believe that all of your wonderful support entitles you to know the circumstances requiring this unfortunate decision.

In October of 2002 the <academic department> of <local education institution> and BANC saw mutual benefit and value and entered into a long-term, contracted relationship. Since that time BANC has rented <local education institution> gyms for our programs and striven to be the best tenant possible, and <academic department> has had the benefit of a good, stable, long-term tenant serving the <local education institution> community and the general public.

On February 19th of this year, we were informed that <local education institution> had decided that going forward the <facilities department> would be responsible for all venue rentals, approvals, scheduling, and contracting. However, we were also told at that time that <facilities department> had decided our contract was invalid and that – with no other stated cause – we would no longer be allowed to use <local education institution> facilities after February, less than two week’s notice. We have never been able to determine the reasons that justified this drastic <facilities deparment> decision.

We protested, and on February 24th were informed that our existing contract would be honored through March, with the proviso that <local education institution> permission to use their name on our web site was withdrawn and we would need to remove all references to <local education institution>. We did this on February 25th.

In early March we informed students and parents of this situation and asked for any suggestions that might help as well as if anyone knew of alternative venues.

We continued to try to work with <local education institution> in good faith. On March 8 we were told informally that BANC would be allowed to fulfill the contract through its expiration on August 31st. We were told we would receive a formal notification, but this has not happened. We were told that <local education institution> was developing new policies and procedures for Facilities rental; and that we would be informed when these were available. This did not happen. We found out only by asking that the new Application procedure was finally available in late July. We submitted an Application on July 29. No questions or clarifications of the Application were asked. We received an email on August 13th that BANC’s Application was completely denied, with a note that a letter would follow. To date we have not received that letter. Based on the tone of the denial, we responded immediately that same day (August 13th) with clarifications that we would appreciate any time on any weekend day (not necessarily the same from weekend to weekend) in any gym which <local education institution> had available and asked that the Application be reconsidered in that light. We have had neither acknowledgement nor response to this request for reconsideration. We have had no response to our requests for the status of the reconsideration.

In the meantime, we have worked hard pursuing alternative venues and wish to express many thanks to all those who gave us suggestions! Unfortunately, none of them have panned out for the size of Training Program which we were able to create with <academic department> support. Besides being incredibly difficult to find 22 hours of gym time on weekends, the time we could find was not the same as we had with <local education institution> and would certainly have caused problems with students’ schedules due to music lessons, Chinese school, or whatever.

We have delayed this decision to suspend as long as possible trying to work with <local education institution> as well as secure another option. Unfortunately all efforts have to date been unsuccessful. Without a venue for the minimum time needed, we are not able to continue these programs.

A further undesired and unfortunate consequence of this situation is that without the Training Program BANC will no longer be able to afford the expense of our current Coach, Kevin Zeng. Many thanks, Kevin, for all your hard work and best wishes as you pursue other options! We hope to meet again.

BANC would also like to specifically acknowledge and thank the <academic department> of <local education institution>. With their support, BANC was able to provide the best Badminton Training Program available in the Bay Area and has produced many Junior National Champions. We were also able to contribute to the environment at <local education institution>, serving students, faculty, and alumni. It is difficult to see this come to an end.

BANC will obviously need some time to reevaluate our options for the future before we can determine what to do next. We will be sure to let you know as soon as we can. Once again, if anyone has any suggestions we would certainly appreciate your help! Until the options are sorted through, any training which may be offered by Coach Zeng is completely separate and not associated with BANC in any way.

For all those in the BANC Training Program, a refund will be processed for September and sent to you as soon as possible.

Last, BANC would like to thank all of you for your great support.

    Sincerely,

    Badminton Association of Northern California
