Boonsak may quit this year
Friday, March 23, 2012 - Axiata Cup
Thailand’s top singles shuttler is considering quitting the sport if after the London Olympics.
The former Thailand Open champion (left), has suffered with a nagging right ankle injury since last year and is still not at his best.
He had surgery last year and since making a comeback, has suffered early round defeats at the Korea, Malaysia, German, All England and Swiss Opens this year.
Currently in Malaysia for the inaugural Axiata Cup, the world’s biggest team championship which offers US$1 million in prize money, the soft spoken Boonsak said the pain in his ankle is something he has to live up for now.
“It has been a horrible time and my comeback has not been too great,” admitted the 30-year-old. “It hurts when I move too fast or jump to smash.
“I don’t know how long I can take it. I don’t want to simply quit the sport as my country needs me, but I also need to look after my body.”
Currently ranked No. 26 in the world, has had expressed his desire to turn to coaching when he eventually hangs up his racquet.
“I don’t know when that will be. Maybe after this year’s Olympics, or at the end of the year. Will I carry on after this? I don’t know.”
The former world No. 4 said the Axiata Cup, an Asean team event which features two singles and one doubles match per tie, will help generate interest in the sport while top guest players such as Mathias Boe and Marc Zwiebler, who are turning out for the Philippines will make the tournament an exciting one.
“Our national players don’t have many chances to play top class tournaments and the Axiata Cup is a big boost for the team as we will get to match wits against some of the world’s best players,” said Boonsak.
Among the players in the tournament are world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei, former world No. 1 in the men’s doubles Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, former world and Olympic champions Taufik Hidayat, Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan.
