    Default Hate strangers

Don't you hate it when your partner just throws the game? I was playing with a stranger at a club the other day, and I was pretty off, having not played for 2 months. I missed some shots, like hitting the frame during a smash. Rhythm was off, didn't warm up. He being not that good either, simply stopped trying to play. Started just lobbing half clears and giving up. Spoiling the fun for everyone. It's was just a game, why do something like that? Anyway, don't do what he did everybody, it pisses the hell out of people.

Sorry to hear that you have a frustrated time on court but he may be just having a real bad day. I am sure it happens to all of us one in a while.
Sometimes I find talking to guy helps like "they are waiting for that shot so be careful".
There are days that no matter what I do - I just cannot get my timing or aim.

I was planning on Posting this a few weeks ago but decided it was Too Negative and didnt' want to offend anyone...but since someone beat me too it - here it is ..everything that ticks me off in Badminton

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
I love badminton and mabye i'll make a list of what i love...but isnt' this more interesting?

This is mostly about players and thier attitudes

    - slippery courts - dusty or bad rubber surfaces... having to wipe my feat w/my hand after every single point to get atleast a little traction. I can't stand not being able to move properly on the court - while most of the other players dont mind sliding around

    - players who absolutely insist that if you hit the net - you pickup the shuttle and hand it to them.. technically its your responsibility but when he is 4 steps closer to the shuttle than you - is it not polite to pick it up himself...i always help my opponents get the shuttle if i'm close it it... why delay the game by demanding THEY get it for you?

    - people who turn you down for singles - injury, about to leave, not feeling well thats fine w/me ...but i spend the last 20 mins of my court time at the club sitting out cuz nobody will give me a game (of 3 or 4 ppl i ask) ...i'm not happy

    - THIS ONE IS BIG - people who IF THEY BEAT YOU IN SINGLES - Refuse to play another game and give you a chance to win one back - BUT if THEY lose ..they Insist you play them again and give them a second shot ?...

    - players who just dont care what happens in a game ... almost intentionally give litte effort and slow the game down by fooling around and wasting your time...this is especially annoying when you are waiting to get a game at a busy club .. even when i'm on the court i am mindfull to keep the game going at a reasonable pace - its not fair to those who have to wait.

    - whenever someone insists you use a bad shuttle - when you've got a much better one in your hand.. this happens all the time to me.

    - your (in-experienced) partner goes for the same shot as you (which is in this case YOUR SHOT) and snaps the head off your raquet - decapitating it sending the upper end halfway accross the gym LOL - his raquet doesn't have a single scratch.

    - you wait all week to play some singles w/a badminton-friend of yours and he makes other plans to do some stupid thing at the last minute.

    - people who are absolutely convinced that they are good - and they suck LOL

    - who think they are good and are in a position to teach other 'younger' players - but they waste everyones time by doing very in-effective, tedious, unrelated - NOT FUN and unimportant drills... and everyone under thier instruction feels it and knows it... this is especially bad in schools - these old gym teachers ... u'd think after 10 years of being a gym teacher you'd know what your doing .. u'd be an expert in each of the sports you are teaching because you take pride in your work - think again

one of the most important abilities of any teacher is to sense what the students are feeling at all times - happy? excited? sad? disapointed - in you perhaps? .. your teaching must relate to how they feel about what your doing - when i was starting out teaching Tennis and i got a bad vibe from my students .. i immediately changed what i was doing to make the class better for them.

    - People who suck and expect Much better players to 'want to' play with them in every game .. or try to get into every game YOU HAVE TO SIT OUT SOMETIMES .. And Untill you Get Better You cant' Expect them to Want to play w/you.

    - People who ONLY want to play w/the best players in the club ALL THE TIME time - never giving anyone lesser a chance - and never being generous enough to share some advice w/the new people.

    - people who outright ignor and avoid you because you are not as good as who they are waiting for - a good player gets there 20 mins early for his game w/anotehr good player but he can't give me a few minutes of hitting time... he wont even let me warm him up before his partner gets here - this happens in doubles too.

    - after you accidentally brush the floor w/your raquet on a tough dig-shot... your raquet is ever so slightly warped on one side and doesnt' last another 20 clears.

    - breaking strings on a newly strung raquet -- ouch those poorly timed clears :/

    - people who swear out loud and a little to much - I Admit i used to be one of the worst offenders of this nasty habit

    - hitting the net on a smash so close to the net you can taste the point - hitting the net on the serve... or a string of like 5 net drops that would almost be perfect if only tehy fell on the other side of the tape :/

    - when your partner wastes your chance to score by doing sum stupid trick server agghhh that bugs me --- alteast 70 percent of the time the partner i'm with will waste the flick serve out of the court *doesnt' matter who because they all do it ... why why why why why - i never serve high because i suck at serving high.. so do they but they insist on wasting our chance to score a point.

    - a nasty string of unforced errors that you simply cannot fathom as to why they happend... especially when its after you were up a lead on serveral points.

    - your partner saying Very Negative things when you screw up - wouldn't it be better to say something encouraging? Negative Negative Negative... rack up the pressure with each mistake and is it really likely they will feel better when about to swing for thier next shot?

    - your partner giving you way to much advice... dont do, this dont do that... it starts when your actually in the lead ...and by the time he's finished your down 5 points - this occurs when they give you WAY TO MUCH to think about

(*Clear the Mechanism* - you HAVE to have to be of a Single Mind about the shot you are about to hit ... all this talk and thinking as a result creates second guessing)

even if he's giving you good advice you have to have a clear head - PLAY THE SHOT YOU WANT - i constantly have to tell myself this ... doing less of one thing and more of another usually only comes with time and experience.

    - *This happend to me tonight* I was just about to start a game of singles and some 'other guy' asks my singles opponent if he wants to play another game of doubles - so he say yes and just walks off the court to play w/them instead - as if i'm not even there.. thats as inconsiderate as it gets

What did i do? - i used the remaining 20 mins of the night to run singles footwork drills by myself - Get the most out of your time w/the cournt even if its plan B... dont let other people's stupidity ruin your efforts to improve.

    - your doubles partner keeps calling the shot for you - and he's wrong more of the time than right - ofcourse you dont have to listen to him.

    - you know the shot is out but for some reason you swing at it anyways LOL ... dumb! and ofcourse you hit the net or something.

    - you wait all day to play badminton 'tonight' and you showup and there is nobody there - did someone forget to tell me the club was closed ?

    - people who move back when they should stay at the net - the thing about this is I"M the only one I know who's guilty of doing this too much :/

    - your doubles partner repeatedly hitting the shuttle long - how hard is it to take something off of it.

    - people who play in jeans or pants.. ack! GO HOME!

    - guys who suck terribly and play w/thier shirts off happy to say i haven't seen that in awhile.

It's a miracle that you even bother playing. You'd be better off running or cycling, in sweet solitude. Or join another club -- it's obvious that either you or the people at your club has a problem.

hahahah!! that struck me too, wedgewenis!! your love for badminton must be more than 100% if you can still like it enough to tolerate all that...

fortunate enough for me, i haven't really come across strangers with that kinda attitude. probably because i'm not really up to the standard to be noticed yet... hey, i'm working on it!! but should i ever do, i'd just laugh it all off and get on with life... after all the world just isn't full of angels is it? you gotta meet some suckers once in a while

Wedge, i agree with parts of your list.... but the other part i disagree with. Lots of them have valid reasons for being so. Lets asy the gym teacher part for instance... even though they tend to not be the most knowledgable people about badminton generally, they still know that practicing the basics makes you better. What do you think you do when you pay for private coaching? You are drilling the basics over and over and over with someone watching you closely. There are more things i disagree/agree with, butyour list was too long so i stopped half way. Some seem like rants though ^_^.

    hi,wedgewenis

Sorry to know that you have the unhappy experience playing with those unpleasant players. I feel lucky that i am not the kind of those people you listed. Cheers, just ignore them !

Even if someone has a very unreliable high service, I feel it can still be usesful, even if it is only to show the opposition that you are willing to flick them - they might not be as quick to rush the service then.

    What do you guys think?

Default Things we hate about badminton

    I thought of a couple more :

    1. Once the competition is over or not and the shuttles provided are all used up, people won't share their personal shuttles and always leave it up to one person to provide them.

    2. Your partner takes it upon themselves to either 'overcoach' you or be TOO encouraging, an instance I had was a partner saying "yes serve over the net and low" most time I went to serve - very annoying and a bit weird seeing I have a very good consistent serve!

    3. Variance on one about good players ignoring you, how about once 4 get in a game, they just keep going all night, have a rest and all 4 go back on, not giving anyone a chance to play with them.

    4. Also the variance on the really bad player after one game they can see they are no hope to match the speed of the rest, but continue joining in and you don't get a good game all night.

    5. When you are warming up with your gf on an unused court and the stadium guy kicks you off (even when the lights are off on that court and no-one is using it)

    6. Getting annoying injuries that won't go away, but you like badminton too much to take a few weeks off to let it recover properly.

    7. Playing in a tournament and not getting enough time between games to go have a lunch, but survive on little snacks throughout the day

This list could get very long, lucky our likes list will be longer than our dislikes:

Mmmm, better start my likes now:

    1. Playing the fastest racquest sport in the world
    2. Improving our fitness, reflexes, skills
    3. Socialising with people who share the same love of the game
    4. Watching the champions play
    5. Enjoying the days where you are "in the zone"
    6. Making a huge comeback and winning the game
    7. After a hard day with sore feet, sore knees, sore shoulder, back, you take home a big trophy for the memories
    8. After a hard day a work, you know you will feel so much better just being free on the court
    9. Finding the latest racquest and going out on the court feeling like a million bucks
    10. Having the satisfaction you have passed on some of your experience, knowledge that helps out another player to improve.

    - people who are absolutely convinced that they are good - and they suck LOL

I HATE THAT! Some girls (all the girls) say that they are good at badminton. "It's so easy". The court is so small. How hard is it? You don't sweat. OMFG! I'm mad just thinking about it.

there are some girls who know they suck but dont like being at that level

they take it serious and try to get better... i notice they improve very fast and after awhile become much stronger players.

others dont try very hard and end up quiting very soon

Or they've never played/seen badminton where one person hits a shot that isn't a half-clear right to where they're standing.
